Cedarlane Garden Vegetable Enchiladas

enchilCraving some  Mexican food, but hate the calories, fat, and artifical junk? Want something sinful tasting, but something you would regret? Look no further than Cedarlane’s Garden Vegetable Enchiladas! These babies are so good they only make you feel like you are eating at a Mexican restaurant, when really you are enjoying them from home!

Each Enchilada is made with organic beans, bell peppers and tortillas, is low fat, vegetarian, and gluten free. The enchiladas are wrapped in a yummy corn tortilla, stuffed with vegetables and cheese, and then layered with a “spicy enchilada sauce”. The box is a bit misleading, it shows 2 enchiladas all rolled up and good to go, but when you cook this meal you obviously can’t eat them with your hands. These yummy enchiladas require a fork and knife (and even a spoon to scrape up the leftover sauce!)

The corn tortilla tastes like the hard yellow taco shells you would get when eating out. I liked the outer layer, and i especially liked after it was cooked, the edges of each enchilada were a little harder/got crusty. It was yummy!
The vegetables inside were cooked nicely, tender and full of flavor. I didn’t care too much for the onion, however. There are a few pieces of onion that are crunchy and they are STRONG. When you take a bite and there is a piece of onion in it- you’ll know! The peppers add a nice touch, and are definitely responsible for the “spicyness” of the dish. There are also pinto beans with the vegetables, and i’m not usually a fan of beans, but there was just the right amount of them in the enchiladas.
Lastly, the sauce. One of my favorite parts. It’s savory, tomatoe-y, a tad spicy, but also sweet. It’s really good! I found myself running my finger on the carton after i finished my enchiladas to eat the remnants of the sauce. De-lish!

Overall, i would definitely get this again and reccommend it highly. It’s very satisfying and packs a nutritional punch with low fat, and high fiber/protein.  Each enchilada is 140 calories, 3 grams of fat, 20 carbs, 3 grams of fiber, 9 grams of protein, and provides 20% of calcium needs. There are 2 enchiladas in the tray. My only complaint was that i wish it was a little more cheesy. I did get one REALLY good bite that had a lot of cheese, but other than that, there isn’t too much cheese flavor. Regardless- GET THIS MEAL!

Enchilada Filling (rennetless non fat cheddar cheese, organic bell pepper, organic pinto beans, rennetless cheddar cheese, organic corn, green chilis, onion, black olives, herbs and spices, salt), Enchilada Sauce (filtered water, organic tomato puree, sweet rice flour, herbs and spices, honey, salt), Organic Corn Tortillas.

Luna Cookies

luna

I looveee Clif bars and Luna bars are pretty good as well. I’m not too crazy about the soy crisp part (hence why i prefer clif bars), but Luna Bars do make some tasty flavors (like S’mores and Nuts over Chocolate!).
However, Luna came out with a new product, the Luna “Cookie”. It comes in 3 flavors, Chocolate Mint, Berry Pomegranate, and Peanut Butter Chocolate. They range from 130 to 150 calories, 2.5-6 grams of fat, 23-27 grams of carbs, 3-4 grams of fiber, and 3-4 grams of protein. They are all natural, whole grain snacks that are also fortified with vitamins and minerals.
Now on to the tasting…

Peanut Butter Chocolate- my favorite of the three. It’s creamy, peanut buttery, and nutty tasting. The cookie isn’t dry at all, its very moist. The chocolate drizzle on top also adds a nice touch. But when do you ever lose with a peanut butter chocolate combination? 🙂

Berry Pomegranate-  this one was fruity and sweet. It has pomegranates and goji berries packed in this little baby, boosting the antioxidant powers. The white drizzle on top was also sweet and had a hint of vanilla.

Chocolate Mint- i wasn’t too crazy about this one, but only because i’m not a minty person. BUT- if you like Girl Scout Thin Mints, you will like this cookie. The first bite is like “WOAH-MINTY”, but as you eat the rest of the cookie, the “mintyness” tones down, and the “chocolateyness” comes out. Here’s a pic of the Chocolate Mint Flavor…berry

Overall, these aren’t “cookies” per se. When opening the cookies, they don’t look like “cookies” either. They are square in shape and are cut down the middle, so there are two “bars”. It looks like a clif z-bar cut in half, to be honest, and each is chewy/moist due to the fig paste in them. I think these would be good for an light afternoon snack or something pre-workout because they are whole grain and have brown rice syrup in them.

Peanut Butter Chocolate-Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Peanut Butter, Organic Fig Paste, Organic Roasted Peanuts, Organic Flaxseed Meal, Organic Chocolate Chips (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Paste, Organic Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Oat Fiber, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Baking Soda.

Berry Pomegranate-Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Dried Blueberries (Organic Blueberries, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Sunflower Oil), Organic Fig Paste, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Pomegranate Juice Concentrate, Organic Flaxseed Meal, Organic Icing (Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Rice Extract, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Goji Berries, Organic Oat Fiber, Organic Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, Baking Soda, Citric Acid, Sea Salt.

Chocolate Mint- Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Fig Paste, Organic Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Organic Cocoa Butter, Lecithin, Natural Flavors), Organic Cocoa Powder (Processed with Alkali), Organic Flaxseed Meal, Organic Icing (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Rice Extract, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Cocoa Powder, Organic Oat Fiber, Organic Natural Flavors, Baking Soda, Sea Salt, Natural Flavor.

Newman’s Own Organic Newman O’s

ooos

Yay for “healthy junk food”!  That may sound like an oxymoron, but it’s true! There are companies that make products VERY similar to popular junk food-but without all the crap! Newman’s Own Company doesn’t let us down here when they made there own version of an “Oreo”.

Newman’s Own “Newman-O’s” come in a variety of flavors,  Crème, Chocolate Crème, Mint Crème, Crème Filled Ginger Cookies, Wheat Free & Dairy Free Crème, and Peanut Butter Crème. They also have an “ode” to all the cookies,  “Ode to Newman-O’s
You might, m’lady tweak my nose.
You could, m’lord step on my toes.
But Heaven help those poor bozos, who try to filch my Newman-O’s. ”
Ha! Cute!

I tried the Original Newman-O. And i must say- i could have sworn i was eating an Oreo-but BETTER! The wafer was chocolatey, crispy and light. The crème was sweet and well, creamy, with a slight tang. They were delicious! I’m one of those who likes to “unscrew” the top and eat it separately and lick the crème, but i also ate one “in full”. The crème and the cookie part together were also scrumptious.

I had a little fun with this review, and i blindfolded my mom and put 2 cookies out, one a Newman-O, and one Oreo. I asked her to taste both, and she said they both were delicious, but she preferred the Newman-O. Woo! She said “Cookie B” (the Oreo) tasted a little too moist, and the “Cookie A” (the Newman-O) was much better. Nice!

2 of these cookies are 130 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 20 carbs, 1 gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.
I tried them dry, but I’m sure they would be excellent with milk or a slab of peanut butter on them (like in the Parent Trap movie!). Delicious!!

Organic Unbleached Flour, Organic Sugar, Powdered Sugar, Organic Palm Oil, Canola Oil (Expeller Pressed), Organic Cocoa, Cocoa (Processed with Alkali), Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Natural Flavor, Salt, Sodium Bicarbonate, Soy Lecithin, (an Emulsifier)

Stonyfield Farm Organic Frozen Yogurt-Cookies ‘n Dream

cook

We all know how much I love yogurt. Creamy, flavored, plain, fruit on the bottom- I just love it! I also LOVE frozen yogurt. Red Mango is a place by me that makes good frozen yogurt-but it’s kind of far away. So, i was at Whole Foods yesterday and i bought Stonyfield Farm Organic Frozen Yogurt in the Cookies ‘n Dream flavor. I figured why not?

So today, as 3 o clock rolled around and my tummy began grumbling for something, i was about to reach for my usual, some soy crisps or a flavored yogurt, but -aha!- i have my frozen yogurt i can try! So i pulled out the container and took a couple big scoops and plopped them into the bowl. It looked promising-just like ice cream. But how did it taste? I took a nibble of the cookie wafer part- delicious! It tasted just like the chocolate cookie part of an oreo-just frozen. There were a lot of cookie chunks throughout the container as well-Stonyfield doesn’t scrimp at all and that’s a good thing!  The frozen yogurt as a whole was amazing. It was creamy, melty, sweet but not overpoweringly sweet like some companies make their products. The cookie pieces were the best part. I made sure i picked a lot of those out when scooping out of the container (yes i am one of those people- like when you buy cookie dough ice cream and you make sure every spoonful you take out of the carton has some cookie dough in it-leaving little for the next person!!)It tasted sinful-but it wasn’t! It was lowfat AND had beneficial probiotics for my digestive system, along with 15% of my daily calcium needs in a 1/2 cup serving. Nice!

Stonyfield promises that their products only contain the “freshest all natural and organic ingredients. They are also produced without the use of antibiotics, synthetic growth hormones or toxic and persistent pesticides and fertilizers. The result is a wide array of the purest, most indulgent treats you’ll find anywhere.”

I definitely felt good eating this- it was yummy AND good for me!

Each 1/2 cup serving is 130 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 25 carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber, and 5 grams of protein. My only complaint was that it lacked fiber-but it is yogurt. But they could have added some inulin to the product or something, but I’ll take it as it for now 🙂

CULTURED PASTEURIZED ORGANIC NONFAT MILK, NATURALLY MILLED ORGANIC SUGAR, ORGANIC CHOCOLATE COOKIES (ORGANIC WHEAT FLOUR, ORGANIC EVAPORATED CANE JUICE, ORGANIC PALM OIL, ORGANIC BLACK COCOA, WATER, ORGANIC INVERT CANE SYRUP, BAKING SODA, SALT, SOY LECITHIN, ORGANIC VANILLA EXTRACT), ORGANIC RICE SYRUP, WHEY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, ORGANIC NATURAL VANILLA FLAVOR, CAROB BEAN GUM, GUAR GUM. Newman’s Own Organic Champion Chip Cookies

newss

I eat pretty healthfully, with balanced meals with protein, carbs, fiber and healthy fats. But after lunch (usually my post-workout meal), i like to have a little “reward” or something sweet to seal the deal and tide me over until snack time later. So with my grilled cheese sandwich and apple, i decided to give Newman’s Own Champion Chip cookies a try. I tried the chocolate chip flavor, but they also come in Espresso Chocolate Chip, Orange Chocolate Chip, Double CHocolate Mint Chip, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and Wheat Free/Dairy Free Chocolate Chip. I hope to try the chocolate chocolate chip ones-those sound good!

I opened the bag and saw a whole bunch of bite-sized cookies. They smelled delicious-fresh and like a bakery. They have giant sized chocolate chips on them that literally melt in your mouth when you take a bite. The cookie part is crisp but also soft, and buttery tasting. It’s crumby and falls apart in your mouth. I could already tell- these cookies were going to be addicting! 🙂 They taste just like something you would get at your local bakery-but made a lot healthier with wholesome ingredients!

These cookies state that they are made with organic palm fruit oil, which according to Newman’s Own is
-“not hydrogenated,
-contains no trans-fatty acids,
– is lower in saturated fat than butter and has no cholesterol,
-is widely used in Europe as an alternative to partially hydrogenated oils,
-is extracted from the palm’s fruit not the palm’s kernel,
-can be grown organically in tropical regions,
-and is of the 3 tropical oils, Palm Fruit oil is 50% saturated while Palm Kernel Oil is 86% and COconut Oil is 92% saturated.”
Cool!

4 cookies is a serving size, and that is 160 calories, 7 grams of fat, 21 carbs, 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of protein.

Organic Unbleached Flour, Organic Sugar, Organic Palm Oil, Organic Chocolate Chips (Organic Sugar, Organic Chocolate Liquor, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Corn Syrup Solids, Soy Lecithin (an emulsifier), Organic Vanilla Beans), Chocolate Chips (Sugar, Unsweetened Chocolate, Cocoa Butter, Dextrose, Soy Lecithin (an emulsifier), Vanilla), Liquid Egg Whites, Oats, Vanilla, Baking Soda, Salt.

Newman’s Own Organic Soy Crisps

soycrisps

So normally in the afternoon i have a yogurt (ahem, Stonyfield or Wallaby Organic. yum!) for a snack with something else that’s little, a handful of cereal, a cookie, etc. But today (after a grueling workout at the gym this morning) I was RAVENOUS! So i thought i needed something a bit more substantial than my normal yogurt.

So, i decided to give Newman’s Own Organic Soy Crisps a try. Okay now before you say EW, SOY IS GROSS, don’t even think about it. Soy crisps taste pretty much like rice cakes-but are healthier and have more satiety packed with them due to the soy protein and isolflavins that soy provides.

I have three of Newman’s flavors (which they so generously donated!), Cinnamon Sugar, White Cheddar and Barbeque. They also come in a lightly salted flavor.

Cinnamon Sugar-I opened up the bag and popped one in my mouth-delicious! They were sweet, crunchy, “cinnamonny” (if that’s a word!), in otherwords- SO GOOD! I got one soy crisp out the bowl i poured that had extra cinnamon and dehydrated cane juice on it… i was a happy camper 😉

Barbeque-tastes just like barbeque chips! My mom even asked for more after i let her try a few (which of course i declined her- get your own bag! 😉 ) There is a subtle sweetness to the BBQ flavor, but you can  taste garlic and tomato flavors as well. These were good!

White Cheddar- just the right amount of seasoning. Not too heavy, not too light. They are cheesy too, and a tad salty. You will need some water with these!!

These soy crisps are definitely a lot healthier than other chips or pretzels that people grab for a snack in the afternoon. In 1 oz. (which is about a small bowlful- a good sized amount), there are 110-120 calories, 2.5-4 grams of fat, 13-15 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, and 7-9 grams of protein. Needless to say i was definitely satisfied after eating these-they quenched my hunger quite nicely. The Cinnamon Sugar Flavor also hit the spot for the fat/sugar laden craving i have been having for Auntie Anne’s Cinnamon Sugar Hot Pretzels lately in a much healthier way. I’m going to be buying these quite often!

Cinnamon Sugar-Organic Low Fat Soy Flour, Organic Rice Flour, Salt, Seasoning (dehydrated cane juice, cinnamon and not more than 2% silicon dioxide and vegetable oil added as a processing aid), Sunflower Oil.

Barbeque-Organic Low Fat Soy Flour, Organic Rice Flour, Salt, Seasoning (dehydrated cane juice, sea salt, onion powder, garlic powder, tomato powder, extractives of paprika, natural flavor, spices, citric acid with not more than 2% sunflower oil and silicon dioxide added), Sunflower Oil.

White Cheddar-Organic Low Fat Soy Flour, Organic Rice Flour, Salt, Seasoning (cheddar cheese [cultured milk, salt, enzymes], whey buttermilk, salt, disodium phosphate), Sunflower Oil.

Newman’s Own Organic milk chocolate Peanut Butter Cups

pb

well i love peanut butter. in fact, it’s my favorite food. so pair with chocolate? it MUST be heaven! i haven’t had a Reese’s in years. Artificial flavors+ trans fats= boo! So, seeing Newman’s Own Organic Peanut Butter Cups certainly caught my eye.

So, i opened up the package, and to my delight, there were not one, not two, but THREE of these little cups to enjoy! Perfect if you just want to fix a sweet tooth without blowing your diet, sharing with friends, or relishing and enjoying all three to yourself (you devil!) . My room was a little hot, so these cups were a little gooey when i opened it up (fine by me!) I took a bite and got a full mouth of chocolate. Yumm. Creamy. i bit around the edges of the peanut butter cup to get all the chocolate and make way to the best part- the peanut butter! THe peanut butter was smooth and the consistency was creamy, light and fluffy even. Would have been better if there was a tad bit more of a salty flavor, but it was still good.

Overall, i liked it.  My mom had one too (she doesn’t eat all organic like i do), and she thought they were yummy as well. It definitely was creamy, and the peanut butter wasn’t dry and pasty tasting like Reeses can sometimes be. You can certainly tell they are made with better ingredients. They taste “cleaner” if you will. They are not identical to Reeses, but they will hit the spot if you need some chocolate and peanut butter, but want to fix your craving in a healthier way. The cocoa used in Newman’s Own’s products is also rainforest alliance certified. I don’t know if that has any affect on you, but now you know! 🙂

3 cups are 190 calories (not tooo bad for candy), 12 grams fat, 17 grams carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 3 grams of protein.

Organic Milk Chocolate (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Whole Milk Powder, Organic Chocolate Liquor, Organic Soy Lecithin [an emulsifier], Organic Vanilla), Creamy Peanut Butter, Organic Yogurt Coating (Organic Sugar [evaporated cane juice] Organic Palm Kernel Oil, Organic Nonfat Yogurt [Milk], Lactic Acid, Organic Soy Lecithin[an emulsifier], Salt and Organic Vanilla), Palm Kernel Oil, Peanut Flour, Salt.

Newman’s Own also comes in other varieties, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups,  Dark Chocolate Mint Cups, Caramel Cups, and Dark Chocolate Caramel Cups. I will be reviewing those as soon as I can- leave a comment if you have tried any!
