Kay’s Naturals Protein Cereal

Protein Cereal? What on EARTH is that? As much as it sounds like eating chicken or protein powder flavored cereal, it’s not. Read on, bloggies! 🙂

Kay’s Naturals is a brand that makes better alternatives to snacks, packed with nutritious protein and fiber for satiety.  They make a whole assortment of snacks and cereals to please all, and they are mostly Gluten Free. They want you to “Build Muscle, Not Fat” with their nutritious and generally low calorie foods made with all natural ingredients.

I was sent the Protein Cereal in Apple Cinnamon and French Vanilla flavors to try. They also have honey almond, which if given the chance, i would definietely like to try. I looove honey! The cereals have no trans fats, are gluten free, and have 9 grams of protein per 100 calorie serving (1 oz of cereal). Each of the cereals are ring shapes and resemble cheerios. They are not as dense as cheerios, and have a light and crunchy texture.

Apple Cinnamon- These were very good. They tasted like a combination of Apple Cinnamon cheerios and Genisoy’s Apple Cinnamon soy crisps, but with a hint of a vanilla flavor as well. They had a good amount of sweetness too to accompany the cinnamon flavor, and I liked the little pieces of dehydrated apples on each piece. They were addicting and went nicely with my Starbucks Vanilla Skinny Latte I got today. It curbed my hunger until dinner time and powered my shopping at the mall too 🙂

French Vanilla– Yum! I liked these better than the apple cinnamon variety, but I enjoyed both for the most part. They were a little bit sweeter than the apple cinnamon, and had a light vanilla and cinnamon flavor. I also tasted just a touch of honey to these crispy O’s. They paired nicely with my Stonyfield Pumpkin Pie Yogurt 🙂

Overall, these deserve 4 stars. You get a nice portion of cereal to munch on for only 100 calories, and you get 9 grams of lean soy protein per serving to curb that hungry beast! I definietly want to try more of Kay’s products, they look delicious! Have you ever tried any? Which ones are your favorite?

1 bag (1 oz) is 100 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 15 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber and 9 grams of protein, with only 3 grams of sugar per serving. Nice!

Apple Cinnamon- Soy protein isolate, yellow corn flour, rice flour, tapioca starch, inulin, pea fiber, natural honey, evaporated cane juice, dehydrated apple pieces, canola oil, cinnamon powder, vanilla extract, natural flavoring, baking powder, double-acting leavening agents, salt.

French VanillaSoy protein isolate, yellow corn flour, rice flour, tapioca starch, inulin, pea fiber, natural honey, evaporated cane juice, canola oil, cinnamon powder, vanilla extract, natural flavoring, baking powder, double-acting leavening agents, salt.

Hillside Candy Go Naturally Organic Hard Candies

We all love candddddyyy. Problem is- most candy doesn’t love US. It’s usually full of High Fructose Corn SYrup, color additives and refined sugar. LUCKILY, I found a brand of candy (Hillside Candy) that has a line GO Naturally, that produces “better-for-you” candy. Not only are they gluten free, they are organic, free of high fructose corn syrup, additives and artificial colors and flavors. They also don’t have refined sugars, and are sweetened with cane juice and brown rice syrup instead.

They come in 6 flavors, all of which I got to try. Apple, Cherry, Ginger, Honey, Honey Lemon and Pomegranate. Each of them are about the size of a nickel, and width wise about 4 nickels piled on top of each other. They lasted pretty long (as long as you don’t bite them!) and had a smooth texture.

Apple– this one had a “light sour apple” flavor. It wasn’t too tangy, but still had a granny smith tartness to it. It was nicely sweetened. 4 stars
Cherry- i like how this one wasn’t red as i expected. most cherry flavored things are red-  but this one was brown, like all the rest (no artificial dyes-woop!). It reminded me of the cherry flavored tootsie pops. Yum! 4 stars
Ginger-eh. I really didn’t care for this one. At first it wasn’t bad- it was a sweeter and milder version of a ginger flavor. I like ginger too- i enjoy those Ginger Chews which some people say are too spicy, but I enjoy. My mom, however, loved the ginger flavor of the  hard candy. Just not my cup of tea. 3 stars
Honey-yuuuum. Sweet, light and flavorful. Tastes like I was actually eating honey in “drop” form. smooth and delicious! 5 stars
Honey Lemon- this one tasted like the Honey flavor too, but, well, with a hint of lemon! It was nicely blended though, not too tart from the lemon and the perfect amount of sweetness from the honey. I can see myself having these especially when I have  a cold. 4 stars
Pomegranate- light and sweet. not tart at all, and i almost detected a hint of lemon blended with a milk pomegranate flavor. Delicious. 4 stars

Overall, these were definietely yummy. I would definietly buy the apple and the honey varieties especially if i saw them in stores by me, as those were my two favorite. They are a nice change on the traditional sucking candy, and as a whole, they deserve 4 stars for taste and nutrition. Good job Hillside! (and thank you for providing me some samples to try!) I would like to try other candies by Hillside, such as the GoLIGHTLY sugar free blends and the Hillside Sweets, sweetened with sugar.

4 pieces are 60 calories, 0 grams of fat, 15 carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber, 10 grams of sugar and 0 grams of protein.

The ingredients are mostly organic evaporated cane juice, organic brown rice syrup, citric acid, and natural flavors.

Vermont Village Cannery Organic Applesauce & Apple Butter

Time for Thanksgiving review number 2! I figured applesauce and apple butter would fit the bill nicely. We always use applesauce as a compliment to the other dishes, but I like it in place of gravy with my turkey and I like using it as a condiment the next day for cold turkey and apple sandwiches. Yum! So i was excited to try products by Vermont Village Cannery. They make applesauce in the individual cups and jars in flavors Original Unsweetened, Raspberry, Mixed Berry, Peach, StrawberryBanana, Maple Syrup, Tropical Mango, Cranberry and Cinnamon and they also make a Spiced Apple Butter.  Basically, me being the fan of applesauce that i am, i’m in applesauce heaven. All of the products are naturally grown and made in Vermont, and the apples are purchased locally and are pesticide free. They also don’t have any added sugars or preservatives, and most of the products are organic if not all  natural.
I got to try the Peach, Cinnamon, Strawberry Banana and Maple Syrup varieties of the applesauce, and the spiced apple butter. What did i think?

Each of the applesauces had a velvety smooth texture, which I absolutely loved. No chunks, pieces or even tiny blumps in these applesauces. It had a smooth feeling going down, and you can tell a lot of TLC was put into cooking and making the applesauces. I enjoyed every single flavor I tried.

Peach- this one had a strong and subtly sweet peach flavor, complimented nicely by the apple. I froze this one for about 30 minutes, and had a little peach slushie. Yum! 4 stars

Cinnamon- oooh. total dessert applesauce we got here. SO smooth, SO delicious. The cinnamon flavor is absolutely perfect, and it tastes as if it had been simmering with cinnamon sticks and cooked for a while to acheive such a good taste. 4 1/2 stars 🙂

Strawberry-Banana- this one had more of a tartness to it than the peach, probably due to the strawberry flavor. I didn’t taste much banana, but rather more of a strawberry-apple combination. It also had just the right amount of sweetness. 4 stars

Maple Syrup-  another favorite. I was so excited to try this one, because i adore maple flavored things. It was the smoothest out of all of them texture wise, and had just a hint of maple flavor. It also had a bit of a lemon aftertaste. I heated it up in the microwave and it tasted like the inside of an apple pie. Deeeeeeee-lish. I would liek to crush some graham cracker crumbs and heat this up and place it on top- sort of like a mock pie! 4 1/2 stars

Spiced Apple Butter- Vermont Village Cannery is awarded BEST APPLE BUTTER EVER. Seriously. This stuff BLEW ME AWAY. It had a buttery (heh, no pun intended) consistency and it was sweet despite no added sugar. It had a nice blend of a nutmeg/cinnamon/maple taste, and I would totally eat it out of the jar (in fact, i did 😉 ) . It was perfect on waffles and heated up. I also used it in place of jelly for my usual PB&J and let’s just say I didn’t miss my sweet grape jelly at all. This stuff is SO good YOU MUST TRY IT. 5 stars!!!

Overall, obviosuly I loved these products. There great and perfect this time of the year, and anytime in my eyes 🙂 I’m giving 4 stars to the applesauce, and 5 for the apple butter. I would like to try the tropical mango variety. It sounds delish! Clearly, Apples +Vermont Village Cannery = amazing. Keep up the good work!

Ener-G Foods Gluten Free Cinnamon Crackers

Another review for those of you who have some allergies! Ener G is a trusted brand that makes tons of products, ranging from cookies, crackers,  breads, pizza doughs, pretty much EVERYTHING for those of you who who need things to be gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, yeast free, egg free and much more! According to the website, “Our mission at Ener-G Foods, as one of the foremost producers of foods for diet-restricted individuals, is to provide a wide range of ready-made foods and mixes that are wholesome, nutritious, delicious, and risk free. We are constantly responding to the demand for special diets with research, innovative products and convenience foods.”

Well, i decided to give Ener-G a shot. I tried the Cinnamon Crackers, (i just love cinnamon or cinnamon sugar flavored things!) which are gluten, wheat, dairy and yeast free, and are also low in protein (some individuals follow a low protein diet). They were very good. They are a little bigger than a wheat thin, with a crispier and crunchier texture. They were bumpy/textured on one side, smooth on the other. On the “bumpy” side, was a sprinkling of sweet cinnamon and sugar, just the perfect amount. Not too sweet and not overpowering. They kind of reminded me of cinnamon raisin bread in a crunchy cracker form. Yum! Very addicting!

I had these by themself, with a cup of milk, and also with a wedge of laughing cow cheese spread on (so good!). I really enjoyed these and will be buying more online on the Ener-G site when I run out (which will be soon…unfortunately 😦 ). I give these 4 stars 🙂 I can’t wait to try more of Ener-G’s products! I really want to try the brownie and cookie products! Yum!

10 crackers is 70 calories (whoop!), 5 grams of fat, 12 carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber (gotta love that fiber!), only 3 grams of sugar and 0 grams of protein. I’d say those are pretty good stats 🙂

Filtered water, Hi Maize Corn Starch, High Oleic Safflower Oil, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Yellow Corn Flour, Xanthan Gum, Methylcellulose, Evaporated Cane Juice Sugar, Cinnamon Powder, Salt.

Don’t forget about my NUTTY give away!

Midel Gluten Free Cookies

midel

I believe in sharing the love to my fans. So, this post is dedicated to those of you who can’t have gluten 😦 . I found some tasty cookies that you guys can safely enjoy!
Midel makes a whole bunch of products, and they have a gluten free line. Midel says, “There’s no compromise needed just because you’re gluten intolerant.” And you shouldn’t have to! Midel makes the cookies and snacks without preservatives, trans fats, or artificial ingredients. Some of them are even dairy free! I got to try the Arrowroot, Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Caramel, and Chocolate Sandwich varieties.

Arrowroot-uhhh, Deliiishh! Nice and buttery flavor! These were sweet and crispy animal shaped crackers. Too cute! I particularly liked the polar bear and the camel. Almost too cute to eat 😉 These have a light vanilla flavor as well, and i think they taste better than the original animal crackers. They aren’t as dry or bland in my opinion, and have more of a buttery/vanilla flavor. 4 stars!

Chocolate Chip-These were good! The cookie is crispy and has a buttery taste to it. They have a golden brown color and have a good amount of chocolate chunks in them. They have the right amount of sweetness- not overpowering at all. A good Chocolate Chip cookie replacement! (plus- you get 5 in a serving! whoop!) 4 stars!

Chocolate Caramel- these were bite sized caramel goodness! At first it’s a strong chocolate flavor, but then, a sweet caramel flavor floods your mouth. I wouldn’t be surprised if caramel oozed out of one of these cookies (i wish!) that’s how good they are. These are really good, and good for munching on 🙂 Each is also the size of about a penny, and you get to eat 23 of them for only 110 calories. Wooo! I’m giving these 5 stars 🙂

Chocolate Sandwich- yum! Doesn’t taste exactly like an Oreo, but still very good. It’s very chocolatey, and has a nice crunch to it. The wafer part is crispy but soft at the same time. I also like the cream on the inside. Sweet and smooth, like it should be. 4 stars 🙂

So, Viola! Cookies for those of you who are sensitive to gluten that taste good! Hey, Midel’s cookies are good for those who can have gluten as well 😉 Overall, i’m giving them 4 stars. All natural, yummy treats everyone can enjoy. The only downside is that they are short of fiber, but then again, they aren’t made with whole grains or whole wheat where it’s easier to incorporate fiber. Anywho- I want to try more of them!! Who needs gluten anyway ? 😛

Cherrybrook Kitchen Vanilla Graham Mini Cookies

glu

more cookie reviews! This time especially dedicated to those of you who cannot tolerate gluten. That’s right- these cookies are GLUTEN FREE, all natural, and healthy!

Cherrybrook Kitchen has a variety of products that they sell that are gluten free. I’m always curious about cookies (who isn’t?) so i got a box of the Vanilla Graham mini cookies (because if cookie wasn’t enough, they are MINI!! Who doesn’t love mini cookies!) Aside from being cute and gluten free, they are also peanut, dairy, egg and nut free. Pretty much anyone can have these!
But do you want them…?
YEP!
They are certainly yummy. They are about the size of a half dollar each, and they have swirls on top. It resembles the top of a snail shell to me. They have a very strong vanilla flavor, but are not overly sweet. They sort of taste like a better Vanilla  Wafer (and they don’t contain any trans FATS!). They are crispy and very “light” tasting.

So overall, there good! I’m giving them 4 stars. I was thinking if the company wanted to expand, they could totally put some gluten free “icing” in the middle or peanut butter even, and make these rock even more. Cherrybrook also makes gluten free icing, so you could purchase some and spread some yourself as well! Aside from that, I think they would be good with a glass of milk. I really want to try the chocolate chip and snickerdoodle varieties of these as well!

6 cookies are 120 calories, 4 grams of fat, 20 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of protein.
My only complaint is the low fiber content,  but that’s expected with a lot of  gluten free foods.

Evaporated cane juice, brown rice flour, corn flour, palm oil, cornstarch, low fat soy flour, corn syrup, vanilla and natural flavors, salt, sodium bicarbonate, soy lecitin, xanthan gum, cinnamon.

check out this giveaway!
