Food Should Taste Good Tortilla Chips

Food Should Taste Good- unless why  bother eating it?
That’s what comes to mind when I thought of these flavored tortilla chips. Flavored? you ask. Yep! They come in a bazillion (okay, not that many, more like eleven) varieties, ranging from chocolate to lime. Yum! They are also all natural, gluten free, a good source of fiber, and made without any GMO’s.

I was sent these delicious tortilla chips in the mail, and after eating them,  I will not be going back to regular corn Tostitos any time soon! Sorry! I got to try the Cinnamon, Sweet Potatoe, Chocolate and Yellow Corn Flavor provided so generously by Food Should Taste Good. I was also sent the Lime flavor but, some grubby hands snatched that bag before I even got a chance to try one! 😡  I’ll keep the person anonymous (you know who you are!!), but he said they were very tasty. Grr.

anyway-
Cinnamon- These weren’t quite what I expected. I was expecting a sweet cinnamon sugar chip-instead what I got was a very strong corn flavor with a hint of ground cinnamon. Now sweet cinnamon as I had expected. It is slightly sweet, but no where near a dessert sugary sweet. It reminded me and tasted like cinnamon life cereal, but less sweet. They were good dipped in suzanne’s ricemellow creme and also with applesauce. 🙂

Sweet Potato- this flavor tricks you! At first I was like “oh, normal flavor, where’s the sweet potato?”. But after-! You get the sweet aftertaste of a sweet potato! It has a very smooth flavor and just the right amount of salt. I like to think it’s one of the healthier ones because I’m technically eating 2 veggies at once- corn & sweet potatoes 😛

Chocolate- This one was my favorite, and not what I expected. I thought it was honestly going to taste funky, but it was actually really good! The flavor is caught between a chocolate graham cracker and a tortilla chip. It’s salty at first, then you taste the corn tortilla, and then a dark chocolate flavor shines through. It was very good, and left that “I just ate CHOCOLATE” flavor in my mouth.

Yellow Corn-standard corn tortilla flavor. Nice and crunchy and just the right amount of salt. Perfect with salsa (obviously), and even by itself. It was very good and I will probably pick this over Tostitos or other less healthy brands.

Overall, I give these 4 stars. They are a healthier alternative to potato chips, have some rather interesting flavors & pack some fiber as well. They can also be combined with various spreads and dips to create crazy-good concoctions. Let me know if you have any of your own!!

1 serving (about 10 chips) ranges from 140 calories, 6-7 grams of fat, 17-19 carbohydrates, 3-4 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.

The ingredients are also pretty much the same for all, with spices and extra flavors added depending on the variety. Check the website here if you are interested. Here’s the stats for the Yellow Corn.
Stone Ground Corn- High Oleic Sunflower and/or Safflower Oil, Sea Salt.

Musselman’s Natural Applesauce for Breast Cancer + GIVEAWAY!

*I added a GIVEAWAY to this post- scroll down for more info!!*

Here’s a special pink post dedicated toward Breast Cancer! Musselman company sent me a very nice gift basket with a GIANT bottle of Natural Applesauce (48oz), some recipe cards, and a Pink ribbon magnet (that I immediately placed on my car 🙂 ), along with a bunch of pink fuzzies (those paper things that protect the package…haha. I loved em!) to show their care for Breast Cancer.

Musselman’s is having a big promotion during the  month of January and, are donating ten cents to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) for every package of Musselman’s Natural Apple Sauce that is bought during the month of January. Ten cents may not seem like a lot, but it really is, and every bit makes a difference. This money will be given to the NBCF to help provide education and mammograms to those in need.

Here is a link featuring Peggy Fleming with her experience of Breast Cancer, and how Musselman’s is helping.

So the natural applesauce is quite tasty, and tastes wholesome and pure. You can tell it’s made from the real deal- crisp, sweet apples and only apples. It’s  not too sweet, and has a smooth feel, but still has a little texture to it (from all the grinded up apples, of course!!).  It’s how natural applesauce should taste-without any added sugar, corn syrup, colors, dyes or preservatives.

1/2 cup is 50 calories, 0 grams of fat, 13 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 0 grams protein.

Applesauce is also a good swap for oils and butter in baking, and adds mild sweetness to dishes. I’m an applesauce fiend .  I eat it almost as much as I eat peanut butter 🙂 :). Seriously, I eat it on waffles, with my Amy’s Enchiladas, mixed with yogurt, pretty much every where! So, here’s a yummy recipe I was sent (with some of my own modifications!!) to use this delicious applesauce.

Good Morning Muffins

Ingredients:
-6 tablespoons butter ( I actually omitted this completely and it came out fine-but do as you choose. Just make sure your butter is NATURAL 😛 )

-1 tsp. baking powder
-1/2 tsp baking soda
-1 tsp. cinnamon
-1/2 tsp. salt
– 3 egg whites (or 2 eggs, if you prefer)
-2/3 cup brown sugar
-1 1/2 cups Musselman’s Natural Applesauce
-3/4 cup sweetened carob (or chocolate) chips

Directions:
1.Preheat to 375 degrees.

PowerBar Performance Energy Bar- Chocolate Peanut Butter

Now, I’m more of a granola bar kinda girl over protein and “energy” bars (Clif being my exception- love you!!), because usually they are filled with too much protein (at least in my opinion for what I’m looking for in a bar), too much saturated fat, and too much sugar. However, PowerBar has a line of products that fit everyone’s needs. They have ones for pre workout, recovery/post workout, ones with lower sugar, etc, and all of them have all natural ingredients.

I decided to try the Performance Energy Line- According to the website, here’s some info about these bars …

  • POWERBAR C2 MAX dual-source energy blend.
  • More sustained energy to muscles.
  • The original energy bar.
  • Low in fat, packing 41–45g of carbs and 8–10g of protein with 230–250 calories per bar.
  • I figured this would be perfect for those early morning workouts when my stomach & I are not quite ready to eat anything big, but need some energy ASAP! (Ironic that I said that, because directly fr0m the website they say “The bars are also an effective option on those days when training starts very early in the morning and eating a pre-workout meal just isn’t realistic.” Now that’s just WEIRD!!)
These bars come in 14 flavors, and you know me, I chose the Chocolate Peanut Butter. Because, reallly, when has the combination ever failed?

So, moving on to the bar. It’s 2.29 ounces, so about average, I’d say the size of a  Nutri-grain bar, but a little longer. It isn’t your typical bar, however. The texture and appearance sort of resemble an oversized tootsie roll. Chewy and easy to rip apart, but definietely reminded me of a tootsie roll. It was pretty dense, and had “crispy” rice pieces in it. It was definietely sweet. The chocolate flavor overpowers the peanut butter flavor, and it takes on an almost coffee-ish taste. But, I liked it! It was tasty and I  actually enjoyed it. I DID need a glass of water to drink though while eating. The sodium was a tad high (200 mg) and the combination of chocolate and peanut butter just begged my mouth for some aqua.

Overall, I enjoyed this and will probably buy it again. I give it 4 stars, because it did as it promised. The PowerBar’s C2 Max dual source energy blend (how much of a commerical do i sound like now? 😛 ) provided me with a ton of energy- I actually got one of the best workouts despite the fact it was 630 in the morning!  It was also very easily digested- I didn’t feel sick while working out and I only ate the bar 30-45 minutes prior. The only thing I didn’t like was that it lacked fiber, so it isn’t a good “meal replacement” bar. But, that’s not really what it’s intended for and I think if they increased the fiber too much, it would be harder to digest. I also wish there was a bit more peanut butter flavor in it-but still yummy 🙂 I also REALLY want to try the Cookies & Cream and Caramel Cookie flavor. Yum!

1 bar is 240 calories, 3.5 grams of fat ( 1 saturated), 44 caarbohydrates (26 sugars), 1 gram of fiber, and 9 grams of protein. You also get 25% calcium needs!

C2 MAX CARBOHYDRATE BLEND (ORGANIC EVAPORATED CANE JUICE SYRUP, MALTODEXTRIN, FRUCTOSE, DEXTROSE), OAT BRAN, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, RICE CRISPS (MILLED RICE, RICE BRAN, ROSEMARY EXTRACT), BROWN RICE FLOUR, PEANUT FLOUR, NATURAL FLAVOR, NONFAT MILK, AND 2% OR LESS OF: PEANUT BUTTER, CHOCOLATE, ALKALIZED COCOA, CANOLA OIL, VEGETABLE GLYCERIN, SALT, ALMOND BUTTER, MINERALS: CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, FERROUS FUMARATE (IRON), VITAMINS: ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), VITAMIN B6 HYDROCHLORIDE, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1).

Whole Earth Tap’n Apple apple butter spread

Building off of the previous post of Suzanne’s Ricemellow Creme, I thought I would do a review on another new favorite spread of mine, Whole Earth’s Tap’n Apple apple butter spread. It has fierce competition with Suzanne’s and Vermont Village Cannery’s apple butter spread when lunch time rolls around and I have one slice of bread smothered in peanut butter and the other…*naked!*

So, this particular Apple Butter spread is literally smooshed apples in a jar. There is no sugar added, no preservatives, no artificial colors, dyes or flavors, and is naturally fat, cholesterol and sodium free. The company Whole Earth (manufactured by PANOS brands) “began as a little company with big ideas about offering more natural, healthier foods. Since 1967, Whole Earth has lived this passion-delivering the most delicious all  natural tastes!” 😀

Now, let us begin. When you think “apple” the color that comes to mind is…green. BUT. The color of this apple butter is more like this, BROWN. To tell you the truth, I’m  not sure why. Apples have skins of red, green and yellow, and flesh of white, but this apple butter is brown. They do add apple cider, so perhaps that has something to do with the coloring.

Anywho- upon opening the jar, it smells like sweetened applesauce and has a creamy, soft texture. The apple butter tastes like a sweetened applesauce as well (but alas! no added sugar!), but is much thicker and not “grainy” as applesauce can sometimes be. It also has a hint of cinnamon flavoring in the background. To bring that flavor out, I added a heaping tablespoon to the whole jar and just a wee bit of nutmeg, and mixed it throughly. After doing so- the flavor was incredible! Cinnamon-y, apple-y, butter-y! 😉
    5 stars for sure !

I like this stuff best, obviously, spread generously on peanut butter sandwiches. But, it was also really good…
    1. spread on waffles,
    2.mixed in with plain yogurt,
and [don’t say ew- it’s AMAZING!]
    3. A sandwich, with 1 slice of bread spread with 1 The Laughing Cow Wedge Cheese in Garlic & Herb flavor, and one slice of bread spread with the Apple Butter. Such a good combo. Tastes sort of like “cream cheese & jelly”. Delish!!

How do you like to eat Apple Butter? Is there a brand YOU like?
    Let me know, bloggies!

1 Tablespoon is 20 calories, 0 grams of fat, 5 carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of fiber, and 0 grams of protein.

The ingredient list is also music to my ears…short, sweet & simple.

    Suzanne’s Ricemellow Creme

    Who want’s a fluffernutter? 😀
What’s better than the sweet and savory (and ultimately sinful) combination of marshmallow fluff and peanut butter. *Drool*
Unfortunately, the standard “fluff” in the supermarket (as tempting as it looks), is nothing more than corn syrup and refined sugar. Luckily, that’s where Suzanne’s Specialties comes in. They make vegan, all natural and organic sweeteners and toppings. They do not include refined sugars, cholesterol, fat, GMO’s, animal products, preservatives and are gluten free.

I certainly wanted a pb&fluff sammie once I recieved Suzanne’s Ricemellow Creme. And look at my result..

                                                                                               ***heaven***

Clearly, this stuff is amazing. The creme with the peanut butter on some whole wheat bread was the ultimate combination. Sweet, creamy and delectable. I could go for another right now…

When you open the tub of ricemellow fluff, it smells sort of like cotton candy. It certainly is fluffy, however. I think it looks like the inside of a burnt marshmellow. You know, when your all laughing and having a good time roasting marshmellows, and then *GASP!* your marshmellow is on fire! Then the outside is a burnt mess,  but the inside is gooey and delicious. That’s what this stuff is. Sweet, gooey (and VERY sticky!!) and delicious. I caught myself several times sticking my knife in after making my sandwich for “just a bit more”. This tub is not going to last very long in my house…

Overall, 5 stars for this product. Soooo tasty and, no refined sugar or corn syrup! I also like this stuff paried with…
1.Newman’s Own Cinnamon Sugar Soy Chips, use it as a dip.
    2. Chocolate pudding and whole wheat pretzels, place a huge dollop on top. Delishh…
3.Apple Slices. Very good combination. And makes a healthy thing even sweeter. 🙂

    Go buy this now!

    Medora Snacks Pogos

Medora snacks are 100 % natural, and were created by a mom who wanted to give her family healthy and nutritious snacks. The word Medora actually means A Mother’s Gift. They have a “unique baking process” that allows them to make wholesome and tasty snacks that are actually GOOD for you. Pogos are one of the snacks they manufacture, and are a blend of real cheese and potatoes, as well as other spices, and come in White Cheddar, Hickory Smoked and Jalapeno Cheddar.

But….What’s a Pogo? Immediately upon hearing “Pogo”, I thought of my childhood Pogo stick. Bouncing aimlessly for hours trying to get consecutive times and such- a truly fun activity. I guess you could compare a Pogo stick to Medora’s snack “Pogos”. These  potato cheese sticks even sort of resemeble a “bounce”! They are wavy in shape and resemble crinkle cut fries-Guess i wasn’t too far off with my “pogo stick” vision!

I tried the White Cheddar and Hickory Smoked flavors of the potato cheese sticks. They are harder and smoother than your typical crunchy cheese doodle, and also more airy.

White Cheddar-yummmm. Even opening and taking a whiff of these made my mouth water. The smell of Cheeeeseee 🙂 These reminded me of a blend of white cheddar popcorn and those skinny potatoe stick snacks I used to have when I was younger. Really good, sharp white cheddar cheese flavor. Not too salty either- just right. These were so good, I ate both servings in one sitting 😀

Hickory Smoked– wow these are good too. They also have a white cheddar flavor, with a hint of paprika. The flaovr is more robust, and certainly delicious. They actually have a real “Hickory Smoke” flavor- I even felt like I tasted a bit of a “bacon” flavor! You can bet I gobbled these down too!

Overall, these get 4 stars. They taste amazing and are very addicting. A perfect and healthier swap for potato chips, and are perfect for when you have the munchies :). I like also how I can have a cheesy snack without all the annoying residue left on my fingers (and inevitably, all over the table, my clothes, etc. 😀 ) They would get 5 stars if they had a weee bit more fiber-they have less than 1 gram per serving , and they are also a little high in sodium (10% for 1 serving). Other than that- you need to try these. Delicious!!

1 serving (1 ounce) is 110 calories, 4 grams of fat, 16-18 carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.

White CheddarPotato Pellets (potato flakes, rice flour, potato starch, salt), Seasoning (whey, semisoft cheese [milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes] buttermilk solids, salt, natural flavor, calcium phosphate, sodium phosphate, lactic acid), Water, Mid Oleic Sunflower Oil.

Hickory Smoked-Potato Pellets (potato flakes, rice flour, potato starch, salt), Seasoning (whey, semisoft cheese [milk, cheese culture, salt, enzymes] buttermilk solids, salt, natural flavor, calcium phosphate, sodium phosphate, lactic acid), Water, Mid Oleic Sunflower Oil, Hickory Smoked Seasoning (maltodextrin, autolyzed yeast, citric acid, paprika, natural smoke flavor).

    Cedarlane Three Layer Enchilada Pie

I know it’s the day after Christmas, but, who’s craving Mexican!?
I was! Too  many sugar cookies (organic of course 😛 ) and yummy dishes can do that to a girl. So I was in the mood for some Mexican, and where other did I turn to than Cedarlane’s Three Layer Enchilada Pie?

Cedarlane’s Three Layer Enchilada Pie is layers of organic corn tortillas, green chilis, cheddar cheese, organic black beans, black olives and cilantro all smothered in a tomatoey salsa-style sauce. Taking it out of the freezer it sure looks prettyy (sorry i forgot to take a picture! D’oh! 😦 ). You could see the cheddar cheese sprinkled on top with about 5 or 6 olives and some scattered green chilis to decorate the dish (and add flavor, obviouslllyyy). When it’s cooked, the cheese melts in with everything else and it has nice and crispy edges. It smells amazing too- saucy, cheesy, onion-y, yumm-y!

I took this “pie” out of the container and transfered it to a plate and put a big heaping of applesauce next to it ( Okay it seems like I eat applesauce with everything!…perhaps that’s true 😀 ). I sort of destroyed the layers by doing that, but it was one big pile of deliciousness on my plate instead of in an organized stack. But i’m not biased- I can eat messy things. Looking at this meal there were a TON  of black beans, so if you like black beans, you are IN LUCK! I scooped up some of my “mess” and it was actually very good. It wasn’t spicy at all, and had a nice cheddar cheese taste. The cheese had a consistency after being microwaved to the cheese in baked macaroni & cheese, rather than being gooey like the cheese in mozzerella sticks (you know, that  annoying kind that you keep pulling and pulling and never ends…*sigh*).  It gets a little pasty, but still has a nice sharp, cheddar taste. The chilis and olives had a wee bit of a crunch to them, and flavored the dish nicely. The taste of the dish overall is like combining Amy’s Cheese Enchiladas with Cedarlane Vegetable Enchiladas. Both I enjoy very much- so I was a happy camper :). I was also happy there was no corn in this dish either (aside from the corn tortilla). Every time I buy enchilada/burrito products there are always corn niblets! I prefer other vegetables, so thank you, Cedarlane for omitting it this time! 🙂

Overall, I liked this. It reminded me of eating a bowl of nachos with the hot salsa/cheese dip in “pie” form. It has a nice tomato and onion flavor, and it was satisfying with the 26 grams of protein it provided. The negatives, however, are that the sodium is a little high (50% Daily value for the whole meal), the saturated fat is a little high (6 grams for the whole meal) and there are 2 servings in one container. I hate that! There’s no way I can cook half or even consider sharing something so delicious. 🙂

Otherwise- 4 stars for you Cedarlane! Delicious!

There are 2 servings per container. Stats are for both servings.
430 calories, 14 grams of fat, 54 carbohydrates, 6 grams of fiber, and 26 grams of protein. You also get 50% calcium needs. woop!

Enchilada Pie Filling (organic black beans, rennetless cheddar cheese, organic green chilis, organic wheat free tamari, herbs and spices, sea salt), Enchilada Pie Salsa Style Sauce (organic tomato puree, organic tomatoes, filtered water, onion, green chilis, organic safflower or canola oil, herbs and spices, cilantro, corn starch, sea salt), Organic Corn Tortillas, Black Olives.

Hey you-enter to win a fancy robe & slippers! in my giveaway!
