Nature’s Path Peanut Choco’ Granola Bar

What’s the first thing Lisa grabs to eat on her birthday?
Cake? no… Cookies? no…Pizza? no…

Obviously a combination of her two favorite things. CHOCOLATE AND PEANUT BUTTER! And what better way to satisfy my birthday craving then with a chocolate + peanut butter chewy granola bar! Ya know- they say as you get older your taste buds change-I beg to differ. I’m one year older and I’m still craving massive amounts of peanut butter, and chocolate + peanut butter will always be a good combination. Enough said. 😀

Anywho- Nature’s Path had just the thing to hit my pb & chocolate craving. Their Peanut Choco’ Granola Bars are new, wheat free, organic, all natural and provide whole grains. I liked the other Nature’s Path bars I tried, so I knew this one would be good too.

First off, I dont know why it says “Peanut Choco’ ” rather than “Peanut Chocolate” or “Peanut Butter Chocolate”, but I’m just going to roll with it. Maybe they thought it sounded nice? Who knows-as long as it tastes good 8) . This bar was actually pretty “hard” for a chewy granola bar. It wasn’t as easily pulled apart as the pumpkin flaxseed variety was, and had more “structure” if you will. I liked that though- I think it was good that it had more of a bite to it, thus, more satisfaction in my eyes. It was also a decently sized bar, 35g, a LOT thicker than Quaker Chewy granola bars, and also a bit longer.

Onto the taste- which really, like I’ve said multiple times before, it’s hard to mess up Peanut butter & Chocolate combinations. And this one, does not fail, and is delicious. The exact words that popped into my head when I took a bite was Ohhh yeaaa. It has a strong peanut flavor, with real chunks of peanuts in the bar. It’s very sweet and salty at the same time- you need water when you eat this or a big glass of milk!! The peanut butter flavor is “sweet”, sort of like Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch. There is also a thick coating of chocolate on top. So good.

Ohhh-bviously this is getting 5 stars. The only thing keeping me from eating 2 in one sitting is that it’s 150 calories for one bar, and only 2 grams of fiber. But- it was 150 calories of bliss, so I can “overthink” those facts ;). I wish Nature’s Path sent me more than 1 bar because I had the AWESOME idea to heat it up in the microwave-after I ate it… 😦 (darnit!!!) I could probably think of another 5 ways to use this bar too. It’s that tasty.

1 bar is 150 calories, 6 grams of fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 3 grams of protein.

Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic rolled oats, organic roasted peanuts, organic chocolatey icing (organic evaporated cane juice, organic palm kern oil, organic cocoa, natural flavors, organic soy lecithin, sea salt), organic crispy rice ( organic brown rice flour, organic evaporated cane juice, sea salt, organic molasses, organic rice bran extract, organic invert cane syrup, organic evaporated cane juice, organic peanut butter (organic peanuts), organic soy oil, organic acacia gum, sea salt, tocopherols (natural vitamin E).

Food Should Taste Good Tortilla Chips

Food Should Taste Good- unless why  bother eating it?
That’s what comes to mind when I thought of these flavored tortilla chips. Flavored? you ask. Yep! They come in a bazillion (okay, not that many, more like eleven) varieties, ranging from chocolate to lime. Yum! They are also all natural, gluten free, a good source of fiber, and made without any GMO’s.

I was sent these delicious tortilla chips in the mail, and after eating them,  I will not be going back to regular corn Tostitos any time soon! Sorry! I got to try the Cinnamon, Sweet Potatoe, Chocolate and Yellow Corn Flavor provided so generously by Food Should Taste Good. I was also sent the Lime flavor but, some grubby hands snatched that bag before I even got a chance to try one! 😡  I’ll keep the person anonymous (you know who you are!!), but he said they were very tasty. Grr.

anyway-
Cinnamon- These weren’t quite what I expected. I was expecting a sweet cinnamon sugar chip-instead what I got was a very strong corn flavor with a hint of ground cinnamon. Now sweet cinnamon as I had expected. It is slightly sweet, but no where near a dessert sugary sweet. It reminded me and tasted like cinnamon life cereal, but less sweet. They were good dipped in suzanne’s ricemellow creme and also with applesauce. 🙂

Sweet Potato- this flavor tricks you! At first I was like “oh, normal flavor, where’s the sweet potato?”. But after-! You get the sweet aftertaste of a sweet potato! It has a very smooth flavor and just the right amount of salt. I like to think it’s one of the healthier ones because I’m technically eating 2 veggies at once- corn & sweet potatoes 😛

Chocolate- This one was my favorite, and not what I expected. I thought it was honestly going to taste funky, but it was actually really good! The flavor is caught between a chocolate graham cracker and a tortilla chip. It’s salty at first, then you taste the corn tortilla, and then a dark chocolate flavor shines through. It was very good, and left that “I just ate CHOCOLATE” flavor in my mouth.

Yellow Corn-standard corn tortilla flavor. Nice and crunchy and just the right amount of salt. Perfect with salsa (obviously), and even by itself. It was very good and I will probably pick this over Tostitos or other less healthy brands.

Overall, I give these 4 stars. They are a healthier alternative to potato chips, have some rather interesting flavors & pack some fiber as well. They can also be combined with various spreads and dips to create crazy-good concoctions. Let me know if you have any of your own!!

1 serving (about 10 chips) ranges from 140 calories, 6-7 grams of fat, 17-19 carbohydrates, 3-4 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.

The ingredients are also pretty much the same for all, with spices and extra flavors added depending on the variety. Check the website here if you are interested. Here’s the stats for the Yellow Corn.
Stone Ground Corn- High Oleic Sunflower and/or Safflower Oil, Sea Salt.

Kopali Organics Dark Chocolate Covered Bananas

I know that you’re drooling once you read that line. You don’t have to lie to me. Dark Chocolate Covered Bananas. Yum. At least I know my mouth was watering once I received this from Kopali Organics. From the website, Kopali Organics says, “every choice we make affects our well being, the lives of countless others, and the future of our world. This is the truth that inspired us to start Kopali as a partnership to restore the connection between the food we eat, the farmers who grow it and the planet we all share. Our part is to bring you radically pure, extremely healthful food, produced in the most compassionate and sustainable ways possible.”

They have 10 SUPERFOODS available as of now, in 5 fruit and 5 chocolate varieties. I was sent the Dark Chocolate Banana variety, but I also really want to try the Dark Chocolate Covered MulberriesDark Chocolate Cacao Nibs and the Dark Chocolate Goji Berries. They all sound delicious!
Each SUPERFOOD is organic, nutrient dense, preservative and artificial flavor free and just plain GOOD for you! Bonus! When you buy Kopali’s products, you are supporting sustainable farmers, their communities and families too. Nice!

The Dark Chocolate Covered Bananas were purely excellent. In the bag, there are little “blumps” of chocolate covered pieces. They are not slices of bananas, but rather resemble the candy Raisin-ettes. However, there are some big chunks, some almost as big as a cotton ball, which made me rather happy 😀 .

Upon opening the bag, the chocolate smell is very strong and pure. The Dark Chocolate had a mellow flavor, which I like, because I prefer milk chocolate over dark. I liked to let these melt slowly in my mouth, letting all the sweet and smooth chocolate dissolve until just a piece of banana was left. The banana piece itself is dried banana, so it’s chewy. It has an overall mellow banana flavor, but is also slightly sweet. It goes perfectly with the chocolate. I’m giving these 5 stars for taste, nutrition, the fact that they help the planet (woo!) and the portion size. You can eat a whole bag for only 240 calories 🙂 Chocolate lovers rejoice!

1 serving (3 table spoons) is 120 calories, 5 grams of fat, 21 carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 1 gram of protein. 3 Tbsp. doesn’t seem like a lot, but it really is. A bag of these is lasting me longer than I thought, and you appreciate the flavors more if you savor them 🙂

Organic Dark Chocolate (Fair Trade Certified) (evaporated cane juice, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, soy lecithin, vanilla), Organic Banana (dried banana, rice flour).

Odwalla Bars

od

On my never ending hunt to find the perfect pre-workout bar, i discovered Odwalla Bars at my local Stop & Shop. They had a variety of flavors, ranging from fruity to nutty, and even ones with extra protein. Odwalla claims that their products are “where nutritious and delicious finally meet”, and only use ingredients found from Mother Nature. They also never contain any preservatives, artificial flavors or colors, trans fats, or GMOs, and their bars are made with whole grains. They sounded pretty good for a pre-workout bar with some fruit to me.
I picked up two of the flavors, Choco-walla Bar and SuperFood variety.
Next time i go to the store, iw ould liek to try the Mocha-walla and the Chocolate Chip Peanut. They were, sadly, sold out when i went to the store though 😦

Moving on, the taste…
Choco-walla– uh, can you say, DELICIOUS? Who knew chocolate for breakfast could be healthy and delicious?! It wasn’t overpoweringly sweet, which is a good thing for me, but rather just the right amount of sweetness. It was certainly chocolately too. Semi-sweet chocolate chips were used, and i even tasted hints of  almond and vanilla flavors as well. Odwalla claims that this bar will satisfy my sweeth tooth, and it sure did! I also really liked how this bar had 5 grams of filling fiber. Woo!  This bar is also a good source of Vitamin E & C, and beta-Carotene.

Each bar is 210 calories, 5 grams of fat,39 carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein.

Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Rolled Oats, SemiSweet Chocolate Chips (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Ground Vanilla Beans), Oat Bran, Organic Oat Flour, , Organic Evaporated cane Juice Syrup, Date Puree, Raisin Puree, Vegetable Gycerin, Oat Fiber, Plum Puree, Dutch Cocoa (Processed with Alkali), Diced Dry Roasted Almonds, Less than 2% of Organic Soy Nuts, Calcium Carbonate, Natural Flavor, Natural Flavor, Natural Chocolate Liquor, Organic Sunflower Oil, Soy Lecithin, Baking Soda, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Salt, Vitamin E (D-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate), Beta Carotene and Folic Acid

SuperFood- Okay, don’t freak out, but this bar is GREEN. Green like spinach. I opened up the package, and i was like wait, is my bar green? or is it just too early in the morning for me? Nope. It indeed, is GREEN. But in this case, GREEN = GOOD. There are 500mg of Spirulina which gives it the color. Spirulina is a blue-green algae that is the most nutrient rich whole food in existence. Nice! It tasted fruity, however, with banana flavors, soft oats and plump raisins throughout the bar. I also tasted a little bit of coconut too. This one’s definitely a keeper for me!

One bar is 200 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 39 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein.

Grape Juice Concentrate, Dates, Raisins, Dried Bananas, Rolled Oats (Organic), Diced Dried Bananas (Organic) (Bananas, Rice Flour), Oat Bran, Rice Syrup, Dried Unsulfured Unsweetened Coconut, Brown Crisp Rice (Rice Flour, Rice Bran, Rosemary Extract), Soy Butter (Soybeans, Soybean Oil, Salt), Vegetable Glycerine, Barley Flour, Oat Flour, Mango, Apple Juice (Apple Juice Concentrate, Water, Ascorbic Acid), Vanilla Flavor, Spirulina, Calcium Carbonate, Soy Lecithin, Baking Soda (Aluminum Free), Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Folic Acid

Newman’s Own Organic Newman O’s

ooos

Yay for “healthy junk food”!  That may sound like an oxymoron, but it’s true! There are companies that make products VERY similar to popular junk food-but without all the crap! Newman’s Own Company doesn’t let us down here when they made there own version of an “Oreo”.

Newman’s Own “Newman-O’s” come in a variety of flavors,  Crème, Chocolate Crème, Mint Crème, Crème Filled Ginger Cookies, Wheat Free & Dairy Free Crème, and Peanut Butter Crème. They also have an “ode” to all the cookies,  “Ode to Newman-O’s
You might, m’lady tweak my nose.
You could, m’lord step on my toes.
But Heaven help those poor bozos, who try to filch my Newman-O’s. ”
Ha! Cute!

I tried the Original Newman-O. And i must say- i could have sworn i was eating an Oreo-but BETTER! The wafer was chocolatey, crispy and light. The crème was sweet and well, creamy, with a slight tang. They were delicious! I’m one of those who likes to “unscrew” the top and eat it separately and lick the crème, but i also ate one “in full”. The crème and the cookie part together were also scrumptious.

I had a little fun with this review, and i blindfolded my mom and put 2 cookies out, one a Newman-O, and one Oreo. I asked her to taste both, and she said they both were delicious, but she preferred the Newman-O. Woo! She said “Cookie B” (the Oreo) tasted a little too moist, and the “Cookie A” (the Newman-O) was much better. Nice!

2 of these cookies are 130 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 20 carbs, 1 gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.
I tried them dry, but I’m sure they would be excellent with milk or a slab of peanut butter on them (like in the Parent Trap movie!). Delicious!!

Organic Unbleached Flour, Organic Sugar, Powdered Sugar, Organic Palm Oil, Canola Oil (Expeller Pressed), Organic Cocoa, Cocoa (Processed with Alkali), Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Natural Flavor, Salt, Sodium Bicarbonate, Soy Lecithin, (an Emulsifier)
