PopChips!

What are Popchips, you ask?
Aside from delicious, Popchips are chips, but they aren’t fried or baked, but rather made with “wholesome potatoes, add a little heat and pressure, and pop! It’s a chip”. They are also relatively low in fat, are all natural, and come in 7 delicious flavors. They are the perfect compliment to your lunch, or eaten directly out of the bag. You can “pop” 😉 them in your purse and take them on the go with the conveinent 100 calorie bag portion too.
I was sent a few of the single serving bags courtesy of PopChips! company (thanks guys!).

Each chip is round and flat in shape, and has the consistency of a Lay’s Potato Chip and a rice cake mixed together. They also have a nice CRUNCH to them which I really enjoyed. PERFECT for putting on a sandwich (like tuna or egg salad! Yum!). In the 100 calorie bag portion, you actually get a decent amount. Not like those “100 calorie packs” where you get, like, 4 of whatever you get. *cough cough* has anyone noticed you only get TWO or THREE “mini muffins” in the 100 calorie packs? What is up with THAT *cough cough*

Anyway- :D…without further a due, let’s see how each flavor ranks up!

Original I definietly like the original. Hits the spot when you craving strictly potato-ey flavors. There’s also a good amount of salt on each chip, and really, what’s a potato chip without some salty goodness? 🙂

Cheddar- oooh. These are good. It’s a good cheddar cheese flavor, it sort of reminded me of macaroni & cheese rather than Cheetos cheese flavor. The cheese flavor isn’t too strong, and you can definetely still taste potato flavors, but these are a really good alternative to some other cheezy snacks which leave fake orange residue on your fingers..But we’ll save that rant for another day! 😉

Barbeque- Oh how I loooove Barebeque flavors! This was more of a sweet barbeque flavor, and I definietly tasted a smokey flavor mixed with a brown sugar/honey flavor. It has a wee bit of heat to it too, and left a little burn on my tongue. There was a strong onion/garlic/salty flavor that mixed nicely with the sweeter tastes. It was sort of like a transformation in my mouth- sweet at first bite, then the spice hits!

Sour Cream & Onion- Okay, Who took my PopChips! and replaced them with Lay’s Sour Cream & Onion chips? They taste IDENTICAL- and that’s a good thing!! These are my favorite (with the barbeque flavor) by far. Seriosuly- I bit into these, adn thought, where on earth is the fat? HOW is it so low? These are BURSTING with flavor, and have a nice onion/garlic taste with a wee bit of parsley. Just make sure you pop an altoid after eating these 😉

Sea Salt & Vinegar I had some help with these. I’m not really a fan of vinegar, I don’t even like the smell when we dye eggs at Easter. So, i went to my friend, the lover of sea salt & vinegar anything, and she gave two thumbs up. In fact, she gobbled the bag up in about 3 minutes flat. I tried one and I thought they were very salty with a very strong, bitter vinegar flavor. But hey, if that’s your style, go for it!

Overall, 4 stars. These are really good, and I’ll definitely buy them again. I’ll also feel less guilty serving these at parties rather than Doritos or Lay’s because they are all natural, lower in fat than other chips, and don’t have any trans fats. I also like how the portion size is almost double of a normal portion for chips. You get about 20 instead of the typical 10-11 chips per serving, and for a few less calories! They also have a Parmesean & Garlic and a Salt & Pepper flavor, but I didn’t get to try those. Have you? How are they!?

1 oz of each flavor (about 19-20 chips) is around 120 calories, 4 grams of fat, 20 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.

Each flavor is made with all natural ingredients. The following is just for the original. If you’d like to see all the flavors, click here.

Natural Potato Ingredients (potato flour, potato starch), Safflower Oil and/or Sunflower Oil, Rice Flour, Sea Salt, Soy Lecithin.

Amy’s California Veggie Burger

What comes to mind when I say, Veggie Burger? Are you thinking of a schlop of veggies pureed into a patty? Well that’s old school veggie burgers, my friends. Veggie & soy products have gone a looooong way from what they used to be, and some are actually quite tasty. I personally, have never had a veggie burger. So here it is- my first “veggie” burger experience. And what better brand to try than Amy’s?

Fortunately, I was sent the California Veggie Burger, voted Favorite Veg Meat by magazine VegNews in the “Veggie Awards of 2009”. They claimed “Vegetarian food darling Amy’s Kitchen delivers your top choice with a whole-foods burger bursting with flavor”. I was excited. This burger had to be good if it won an award in a magazine. Plus, I’m in love with Amy’s. How could i lose?

And I sure didn’t! 😀
Each burger is the average patty size, and actually decently thick. It has a brown/tanish hue and looking at the patty itself you can see all the yummy veggies, like celery and carrots, blended nicely in the burger. I cooked mine in the microwave for 60 seconds, and then popped it in the toaster oven to crisp it up a bit. I took a bite, and instantly I thought of Amy’s Kitchen Veggie Steak Whole Meal- a.k.a. formerly Country Dinner Whole Meal. The burger tastes very similar to the veggie steak in this meal, with slight variation of course. It has an oaty, lima bean taste, with a hint of cheddar cheese and some salt. It has a “grainy” texture, I felt it was more “crab cake” than “ground beef” consistency. There are also little crunchies throughout the burger due to the walnuts. It was very flavorful and I actually did really enjoy it. It also had a nice garlic and onion flavor to it as well.
Overall, I give this burger 4 stars. It was surprisingly filling and satisfying, and very tasty. Amy’s never lets me down! I had it twice so far, once as a light meal with some salad and applesauce, and once with a slice of cheddar cheese on top. Both were very good combinations, I especially enjoyed it with the applesauce because I love sweet & savory mixed together.
So-moral of the story? Don’t fear veggie products! (at least not ones made by Amy’s Kitchen). I really want to try the Cheddar Burger and the Gluten Free Bistro varieties too!! 🙂 🙂

1 burger is 140 calories, 5 grams of fat, 19 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber, and 6 grams of protein. A good swap for beef anyday.

Stonyfield Farm Organic Banilla Yogurt

Stonyfield Farm, as you all should know, makes dozens of products ranging from organic/all natural yogurts, frozen desserts and smoothies. They all benefit the earth and are made using only nature’s finest ingredients. I personally love their yogurt, and I’ve passed by the Banilla flavored yogurt way too many times in the store, simply because it was in the 32 oz. cup instead of the individual cups. For conveinence, of course, I usually only buy the individual 6 oz. cups, plus it is easy portion control. However, I decided I was in the mood for a new flavor of yogurt, and Stonyfield has never let me down before, so I decided to give Banilla a try.

So i took home the 32 oz. “cup” of yogurt and took out a spoon from my cupboard. I took a scoop and instantly fell in love. My taste-buds rejoiced upon tasting this yogurt. THIS WAS MY NEW FAVORITE FLAVOR! I was actually, to be honest, a little mad at myself for not buying it any sooner just because it was in the 32 oz. size instead of the 6 oz.

It was very creamy, not runny at all, and had a real banana flavor. Not that “artificial banana” flavor that you get when you buy candy like Laffy Taffy or something of the sort. But it really tasted like vanilla yogurt blended with banana puree. It was sweet, but not too sweet, and was just perfect. Definietely worth 5 stars! I’ve had it multiple times already, and my favorite concoctions [so far] are

1. Banilla Yogurt, Trader Joe’s Chocolate Toucan cookies, sliced bananas, and a squirt of whipped cream.

2.Banilla Yogurt, Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cereal, sliced bananas, and some organic chocolate syrup.

3.Banilla Yogurt, Kashi Honey Puffs and a Kashi Dark Chocolate cookie.

The possibilities are endless! I’m planning on freezing some soon and maybe mixing it with some peanut butter. Yum!! I will definietly keep buying this flavor, (and secretly wish they transfer it to the 6 oz variety!!) especially with the MyStonyField Rewards program, it is worth 4 points per lid!

Penny’s Low Fat Desserts- Muffin Tops

penny

Are you a fan of Vitalicious’s Vitamuffins? Well, then you should DEFINITELY check out Penny’s Low Fat Desserts! Penny’s makes all natural, nutritious desserts, such as muffins, cookies and what I got to try, the muffin tops! The muffin tops come in Orange-Cranberry, Almond Poppy seed, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Carrot Raisin and Apple Cinnamon flavor. All are about 100-120 calories, generously sized (2 oz) and have 10% calcium needs per serving. There also individually wrapped, so portion control is easy 🙂

So how did these muffin tops taste? Well…

Carrot Raisin Top- my first bite, my brain said “Oh. My. God. THIS IS DELICIOUS!” The raisins were plump and perfect. The muffin was chewy and soft. You could actually see the pieces of carrots! I tasted a nice hint of nutmeg, and overall it had a sweet carrot flavor, like carrot cake. It was excellent. 5 stars 🙂 🙂

Almond Poppy Seed Top- Also DELICIOUS! It had a nice, light, lemony flavor and i really liked the teensy poppy seeds that added a bit of a crunch. It was soft, and moist and tasted like angel food cake to me. Went perfect with my Brown Cow Strawberry greek yogurt. I actually let a little piece sit in the yogurt for a few minutes and it got really soft and yummy! 5 stars for this one too!!

Apple Cinnamon Top– this one was also amazing! It tasted like Quaker Apple Cinnamon oatmeal to me! It was very moist, and mildly sweet. The cinnamon added a nice touch. I loved the apple chunks/pieces in it. 4 stars!

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Top- This one was the only one i wasn’t crazy about. And it’s chocolate too! Don’t get me wrong, it was good, but not as chocolatey as i expected. I think i would have liked it better if it wasn’t double chocolate, but perhaps just a chocolate chip muffin. But, it was soft, and mildly sweet. I did like the gooey chocolate chips,  especially after warming in the microwave 🙂 It had a mellow chocolate flavor, and it paired well with a glass of milk. I think it might taste good with a smearing of peanut butter on it. 3 stars

Overall, these kick butt! I’m giving them 4 stars as a whole. The almond poppy seed and carrot raisin are 2 that I like a LOT !  I paired these with a yogurt for breakfast and was satisfied because it was not only delicious, but filling. I would love Penny to make a banana flavored top or something with peanut butter.

Mom Made Foods- Cheesy Mac Meal

mom

Ahhh, Mac & cheese. A traditional comfort food. What’s better than some ooey gooey cheesy macaroni on a cold winter day or after a stressful day at work/school?
Exactly.
But, we all know how Velveeta and Kraft’s nutritional stats hold up. And after preparing Kraft’s boxed version with butter and milk, I sure  got the blues (of regret for eating it!). So, Mom Made Foods makes a healthier alternative to macaroni & cheese. “Mom Made” makes it seem like it’s geared toward children, but trust me, all ages can enjoy this dish.
Mom Made Cheesy Mac Meal has some extra health  benefits in their yogurt. They sneak in butternut squash and sweet potatoes in their cheese sauce- but you would never tell. After heating up this individual tray (yay portion control!), you don’t see any chunks of squash or potatoes, just a bunch of elbow macaroni and cute little peas as well.
After heating it up, the macaroni cooked nicely. It wasn’t too chewy or overdone either. Just the way I like my macaroni- has a bite but doesn’t fall to pieces in my mouth.
The peas were nice and crisp too, not mushy blobs. I personally love peas, and i hate when frozen dinners ruin them by making them all soggy and nasty. Not the case here!
Moving on to the cheese sauce, it was thicker than I expected. It wasn’t a runny cheese sauce, and it really stuck on the macaroni. It was more of a milder cheese taste than I would expected, and it wasn’t as salty tasting as Velveeta or other boxed brands (there’s only 340mg of sodium per serving as compared to 720mg+ in other varieties!). It was good though. An enjoyable mac & cheese entree 🙂

Overall, i liked it. 4 stars for me  for excellent nutrition stats and sneaky veggies. There are a lot of noodles in this entree, especially considering it’s geared toward kids. However, I would say it’s a tad too small for an adult or those of us with raging appetites (especially after going to the gym), so i paired it some strawberry organic milk and some  extra veggies and had it for lunch. My only complaint is that it’s not made with whole wheat macaroni, but it still packs in some fiber 🙂 I would love love love to try the other things Mom Made Foods has to offer, like fiesta rice and bean burritos!

1 entree is 200 calories, 3 grams of fat, 36 carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber, and 10 grams of protein.

Organic macaroni (organic durum semolina), Organic skim milk (organic pasteurized skim milk, vitamin d), Organic green peas, Organic sweet potato, Organic butternut squash, Organic cheese powder (Organic cheddar cheese [organic pasteurized milk, salt, cheese cultures, enzymes], Organic whey, Salt, Lactic acid, Citric acid, Annatto [for color], Natural mixed tocopherols); Organic butter (organic sweet cream, salt).

Stonyfield Farm Organic Pumpkin Pie yogurt

Here's me and my new love

Here's me and my new love

I LOVE when seasonal flavors come out! I nearly jumped for joy when i saw PUMPKIN PIE flavored YOGURT at the store yesterday. So much that i was COMPLETELY distracted to the fact that i was supposed to buy bread (same aisle as the yogurt), and instead of coming home with a loaf of Wonder bread for my Mom (who apparently really wanted a PB&J sandwich), i came home with 4 Pumpkin Pie flavored yogurts. Whoops,  Sorry, Mom  🙂

Stonyfield says “Ahhh, autumn. Here in New Hampshire, it’s time for warm sweaters, crisp air, blazing foliage and a big wedge of delicious pumpkin pie. Savor the season, ’cause it won’t last long”.
Although i’m still in partial summer mode, i figured this yogurt would get me into the fall spirit. Plus, pumpkin pie is good year round in my opinion 🙂

So, onto the yogurt. It was deliciously smooth and creamy, as promised on the front of the container. And, it did taste like pumpkin ! It was a light orange/beige colored yogurt, with a subtle pumpkin pie flavor. It wasn’t over poweringly sweet as some blended yogurts can be, but just the right amount. When i was stirring it there were little brown specks that looked like nutmeg or cinnamon, and i thought i even tasted nutmeg/cinnamon, but it wasn’t listed in the ingredients on the back. Who knows, but this yogurt is yummy. I’m just mad that it’s only seasonal, so only available to buy & enjoy for a limited time (so stock up!!). My other favorite (pomegranate berry) is also seasonal. WHY CAN’T I HAVE A FAVORITE THEY SELL YEAR ROUND!? 😦

1 container is 130 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 21 carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber, 7 grams of protein and 25% calcium, along with lovely probiotics that yogurt provides.

Cultured Pasteurized Organic Low Fat Milk, Naturally Milled Organic Sugar, Organic Caramel Color, Organic Carrot Juice Concentrate (for color), Pectic, Natural Flavor, Organic Pumpkin Juice Concentrate (for color), Vitamin D3.

Cedarlane Beans, Rice & Cheese Style Burrito

ceeeeee

After trying Cedarlane’s Enchiladas [ see my post here ] i had a good feeling about their other products, such as the Beans, Rice & Cheese Style Burrito. It is made with organic ingredients, such as the tortilla, beans and the rice, are all organic. But what’s this? This Burrito only has 1 GRAM OF FAT? How can it be cheesy? How can it be TASTY?! Well, readers, fear not, Cedarlane knows what they are doing!

So, I wrapped this burrito in a paper towel like I was supposed to and put it in the microwave. After two minutes, a spicy, flavorfull aroma filled my kitchen and made my tummy grumble. My mom even commented on “what smells so good?” and was totally jealous when i popped this baby out of the microwave. A little bit of cheese oozed out of the burrito, but that didn’t bother me a bit. It just means there’s plenty of filling on the inside to enjoy!
I cut the burrito in half, and there was a substantial amount of filling. They didn’t scrimp on it- it looked like it would actually keep me full! There is also a thick amount of bread as well as the filling. The bread has an almost “bisquity” taste to it, and is also slightly sweet. It cooked pretty evenly, chewy in some areas due to the filling and crisper in others, but it was good. I actually enjoyed the mixed consistency of crisper tortilla on the ends and a softer, doughy tortilla in the middle. It tastes like the inside of a pizza crust as well. Yum. When is that ever a bad thing?
Onto the insides, which were also delicious! There were a lot of beans and brown rice all smothered in a tasty tomato sauce with cheese dispersed. The cheese was so good- a great compliment to the burrito. It was soy cheese, which is how the burrito is so low in fat and still tasty, but if i didn’t tell you it was soy, you wouldn’t be able to tell (so don’t turn up your nose until you try it! 😉 )

Overall, I will be buying this burrito again. It was filling, delicious, and the right size for a quick dinner to be paired with a glass of milk and some veggies, or even by itself if your really pressed for time. One burrito is 260 calories, 1 gram of fat, 48 carbohydrates, 7 grams of fiber (woo!), and 13 grams of protein. You also get 25% Vitamin C and 10% of your daily calcium needs. My only complaint (sorry!!) is that they didn’t use a whole wheat wrap 😦 There is plenty of fiber in this burrito already, and they did use brown rice instead of white, but this would be absolutely perfect if the tortilla was whole wheat. For now, it’s fine by me!

Burrito Filling (Organic Pinto Beans, Organic Brown Rice, Soy Cheddar Cheese [soy beverage {filtered water, soy protein and soy milk solids}, casein {a milk protein}, soy oil, food starch modified, natural flavors, powdered cellulose, salt, sodium citrate, citric and lactic acids, calcium phosphate, carotenal color, carrageenan {a natural seaweed fiber}], Organic Tomatoes, Organic Tomato Puree, Filtered Water, Green Chilis, Onion, Herbs and Spices, Tamari, Cilantro, Sea Salt, Corn Starch), Organic Unbleached Flour Tortilla.
