Susta Natural Sweetener

Whooooooo likes sugar? ( I do ! I do!)

But, whooooo likes all the calories sugar contains and how ADDICTIVE it is, making us crave MORE?

That’s what I thought. 🙂

So where to turn? Should I forget sugar all together? As in no more brownies? or cupcakes? No. Moderation is key. Everyone needs a lil suggah 🙂

Or, Should  I try artificial sweeteners? I would try to limit those too…

Luckily for you, I found a pretty good answer. Aside from Stevia all natural sweetener, I found a product that is sweet, low in calories, and actually has some health benefits. NXT Nutritionals manufactures a sweetener called Susta, and claims it is “A Healthy Alternative to Table Sugar and Artificial Sweeteners”.

This particular sweetener combines soluble fiber (prebiotics) and probiotics(like the ones found in yogurt), has added essential nutrients and vitamins, is all natural, and has a low Glycemic Index (so no harsh blood sugar spikes!). Each packet is also only 5 calories per serving.

Each packet provides an ample amount of a fine, white powder, not really granulated per se, but more refined. It has a nice, sweet flavor, very similar to sucrose or table sugar. It also doesn’t have a nasty aftertaste like Splenda, Aspartame or even Stevia can have some times (sorry, Stevia- I still love you!). I found it works best in foods as a sweetener, and not liquids. I added a packet to oatmeal, and it really pumped up the flavor. I also sprinkled it on banana slices (which wasn’t “ripe” enough, or sweet enough, for my liking), and it added a nice, mellow sweetness. Nothing too overpowering- but just right. Which is why the flavor was a bit lost when I added it to my tea- it was too mellow and dissolved quickly- so I will stick to sweetning foods with these packets.

Overall, I like these packets. I give them 4 stars, because it really is a healthier alternative to table sugar, and has the added benefit of probiotics, fiber, and added nutrients. Good job, NXT Nutritionals!

1 packet is 5 calories, 0 grams of fat, 2 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fiber, and 0 grams of protein. You also get 10% Vitamin C, 5% of Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 and Biotin, and 3% of your daily value of Niacin, Selenium and Chromium. How’s that for sweeeet! 😉

Stonyfield Farm Organic Banilla Yogurt

Stonyfield Farm, as you all should know, makes dozens of products ranging from organic/all natural yogurts, frozen desserts and smoothies. They all benefit the earth and are made using only nature’s finest ingredients. I personally love their yogurt, and I’ve passed by the Banilla flavored yogurt way too many times in the store, simply because it was in the 32 oz. cup instead of the individual cups. For conveinence, of course, I usually only buy the individual 6 oz. cups, plus it is easy portion control. However, I decided I was in the mood for a new flavor of yogurt, and Stonyfield has never let me down before, so I decided to give Banilla a try.

So i took home the 32 oz. “cup” of yogurt and took out a spoon from my cupboard. I took a scoop and instantly fell in love. My taste-buds rejoiced upon tasting this yogurt. THIS WAS MY NEW FAVORITE FLAVOR! I was actually, to be honest, a little mad at myself for not buying it any sooner just because it was in the 32 oz. size instead of the 6 oz.

It was very creamy, not runny at all, and had a real banana flavor. Not that “artificial banana” flavor that you get when you buy candy like Laffy Taffy or something of the sort. But it really tasted like vanilla yogurt blended with banana puree. It was sweet, but not too sweet, and was just perfect. Definietely worth 5 stars! I’ve had it multiple times already, and my favorite concoctions [so far] are

1. Banilla Yogurt, Trader Joe’s Chocolate Toucan cookies, sliced bananas, and a squirt of whipped cream.

2.Banilla Yogurt, Kashi Go Lean Crunch Cereal, sliced bananas, and some organic chocolate syrup.

3.Banilla Yogurt, Kashi Honey Puffs and a Kashi Dark Chocolate cookie.

The possibilities are endless! I’m planning on freezing some soon and maybe mixing it with some peanut butter. Yum!! I will definietly keep buying this flavor, (and secretly wish they transfer it to the 6 oz variety!!) especially with the MyStonyField Rewards program, it is worth 4 points per lid!

1 cup is 200 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 35 carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber, 9 grams of protein and 35% daily value of calcium + tons of probiotics!

Chobani Greek Flavored Yogurt

CHO

We all know my love for yogurt. Now it’s time to explore on the GREEK side of yogurt!
What exactly is greek yogurt? Well, after the milk is heated and cultured to make yogurt, it is then allowed to sit and strain, so the “whey” is removed. What’s left is a creamier and thicker version of yogurt.
I got the pleasure of trying Chobani’s Greek Non Fat Flavored Yogurts in Blueberry, Peach and Strawberry varieties. But how did these play out for my normal love of yogurt?
Quite excellently. Each yogurt has the desired fruit on the bottom, so you can eat it swirled together , seperately, or do what I did, and eat half the yogurt and half the fruit topping on the spoon at once. The yogurt is extremely thick and creamy, it’s hard to believe there’s no fat in these! The peach flavor was my favorite, surprisingly. Normally I’m a blueberry girl, but the peach flavor was GREAT! The peaches tasted fresh, and they had just the right amount of sweetness for the greek yogurt. The blueberry flavor and strawberry flavor were also yummy. There were real bitty blueberries and chunks of strawberries that pack a tough antioxidant punch in each cup.
These yogurts were much more substantial than regular yogurt as well. I noticed i was significantly fuller (due to the higher protein content versus regular yogurt) when I paired the Chobani yogurt with some whole grain cereal for some extra crunch. These were great-4 Stars- you should definitely try them. I can’t wait to go out and buy the pomegranate and pineapple flavors!

Each yogurt is 140 calories, 0 grams of fat, 20 carbohydrates, >1 gram of fiber, and 14 grams of protein. You also get 15% of daily calcium and probiotics!

Happy Melts Organic Yogurt Snacks

happy

okay okay, this one is geared toward babies & toddlers…but i got a free coupon, and we all know my love for yogurt. How could these possibly be bad? I saw 2 flavors at whole foods, Mixed Berry and Banana Mango. Banana Mango was the one i had chosen. These yogurt snacks are freeze-dried yogurt and fruit, are gluten free, have pre and probiotics, and “melt in baby’s (or mine!) mouth”.

Each one is about the size of a nickel, and the consistency of those Necco wafer candies (if they even make those anymore. I think they come out around Valentines day). The taste is very mellow. It’s not bad, but different. I was sort of expecting sweet yogurty flavor, but it was more toned down.  It almost had a cheesy taste to it if you will. I did like sucking on them though, and they did “melt” in my mouth, but slowly. They were creamy and almost foamy-ish once they hit the tounge. The sweetness actually comes out once you fully dissolved the piece in your mouth. They are certainly something I have never tasted or experienced before, but i liked them!! 🙂 I tasted more of the mango flavor with a hint of banana. I think these would be good maybe mixed in a trail mix or some plain cereal like kashi go lean or bran/wheat flakes for some added yum and sweetness. They are definitetly good for babies and toddlers though, they are perfect finger food.

1/4 of a cup is 30 calories, 0 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbs, 0 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein. You also get 12% of your daily calcium and vitamin D needs, as well as some healthy probiotics for digestion. woo!

Vitamin D Fortified Cultured Pasteurized Organic Nonfat Milk, Organic Banana, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Mango, Organic Tapioca, Pectic, Organic Locust Bean Gum, Inulin, Natural Flavor, Live & Active Cultures: Streptococcus thermophilus, Bulgaricus, Lactobacillus, Acidophilus, B. Lactis, Lactobacillus Paracasei, Lactobacillus Rhamnosus. (woo thats a mouthful!! 🙂 )
