LightLife Smart Wings Honey BBQ

I feel this is an appropriate review, especially with football season coming to an end and the SUPERBOWL coming into play. Plus, who doesn’t like saucy, honey, barbe-quey anything ? ūüėÄ

And so, scanning the natural section at my local grocery store, I saw LightLife Smart Wings in Honey BBQ and Buffalo flavor. I’m a sweet kinda girl, not so much spicy, so I picked up the Honey BBQ flavor with the coupon LightLife sent me.

Each box of these veggie protein wings comes with 8 wings, or two servings. They are so cute too- shaped like actual chicken wings! But, no chicken here. These are totally vegetarian (they do contain egg white, however, for those of you who are vegan). I made these both ways as suggested, Microwave & in the frying pan. I suggest the Frying Pan, as LightLife does too. Done in the microwave, the veggie wing came out a bit chewier than when I used the frying pan to heat these babies up.

Now, onto the TASTE!
These are freakin’ delicious! They really are finger lickin’ good. They¬†are covered in a sweet, barbeque sauce, which had hints of molasses, honey and a garlicy tomato flavor. I was literally licking the sauce off the packet it came in- so tasty! They were a wee bit salty, but still very good. Some of you may be worried about the texture– as veggie products can be chewy or..weird.. in texture. But not the case here- these wings do have a bite to them, but are chewy like a burger. Chewy in a good way if you will- they have the appropriate consistency.

I had these with some Annie’s Organic Macaroni & Cheese & broccoli (and some chocolate milk-not shown), and I was full all the way until snack time. They pack in protein and fiber, and are very satisfying. You could even have them as a snack with some raw veggies on the side, as they don’t need any extra dip. They are the 3 S’s- Sweet, Salty & Savory. And surprisingly-NO FAT!! (take THAT¬†Pizza Hut!!)¬†I give these 4 1/2¬†stars!

¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† *I know your drooling… ūüôā !*

1 serving (4 wings) is 120 calories, 0 grams of fat, 16 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber, and 13 grams of protein.

Wing: Water, Soy Protein Concentrate, Wheat Fluten, Soy Protein Isolate, Egg White Powder, Less than 2% of: Cellulose Gum, Yeast Extract, Natural Flavor, Sea Salt, Onion Powder, Dried Garlic, Potato Starch, Sunflower Oil, Salt.

Kay’s Naturals Protein Cereal

Protein Cereal? What on EARTH is that? As much as it sounds like eating chicken or protein powder flavored cereal, it’s not. Read on, bloggies! ūüôā

Kay’s Naturals is a brand that makes better alternatives to snacks, packed with nutritious protein and¬†fiber for satiety.¬†¬†They make a whole assortment of snacks and cereals to please all, and they are mostly Gluten Free. They want you to “Build Muscle, Not Fat” with their nutritious and generally low calorie foods made with all natural ingredients.

I was sent the Protein Cereal in Apple Cinnamon and French Vanilla flavors to try. They also have honey almond, which if given the chance, i would definietely like to try. I looove honey! The cereals have no trans fats, are gluten free, and have 9 grams of protein per 100 calorie serving (1 oz of cereal). Each of the cereals are ring shapes and resemble cheerios. They are not as dense as cheerios, and have a light and crunchy texture.

Apple Cinnamon- These were very good. They tasted like a combination of Apple Cinnamon cheerios and Genisoy’s Apple Cinnamon soy crisps, but with a¬†hint of a vanilla flavor as well. They had a good amount of sweetness too to accompany the cinnamon flavor, and¬†I liked the little pieces of dehydrated apples on each¬†piece.¬†They were addicting and went nicely with my Starbucks Vanilla¬†Skinny Latte I got today. It curbed my hunger until dinner time and powered my shopping at the mall too ūüôā

French Vanilla– Yum! I liked these better than the apple cinnamon variety, but I enjoyed both for the most part. They were a little bit sweeter than the apple cinnamon, and had a light vanilla and cinnamon flavor. I also tasted just a touch of honey to these crispy O’s. They paired nicely with my Stonyfield Pumpkin Pie Yogurt ūüôā

Overall, these deserve 4 stars. You get a nice portion of cereal to munch on for only 100 calories, and you get 9 grams of lean soy protein per serving to curb that hungry beast! I definietly want to try more of Kay’s products, they look delicious! Have you ever tried any? Which ones are your favorite?

1 bag (1 oz) is 100 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 15 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber and 9 grams of protein, with only 3 grams of sugar per serving. Nice!

Apple Cinnamon- Soy protein isolate, yellow corn flour, rice flour, tapioca starch, inulin, pea fiber, natural honey, evaporated cane juice, dehydrated apple pieces, canola oil, cinnamon powder, vanilla extract, natural flavoring, baking powder, double-acting leavening agents, salt.

French VanillaSoy protein isolate, yellow corn flour, rice flour, tapioca starch, inulin, pea fiber, natural honey, evaporated cane juice, canola oil, cinnamon powder, vanilla extract, natural flavoring, baking powder, double-acting leavening agents, salt.

LightLife Smart Deli Roast Turkey

So with Thanksgiving (gobble gobble!) rounding the corner, i figured I would do a whole bunch of Thanksgiving-related posts.
Here we have a “turkey” to review.¬†I consider myself a “somewhat” vegetarian. I really don’t eat meat or fish- only if I go to a party or some other celebration and I don’t want¬† to make a fuss. However, when i do eat meat, i don’t eat beef or porc products. So, Thanksgiving is pretty much the only time of year i eat Turkey. So,¬†I was rather curious when I saw Smart Deli Roast Turkey in stores by me. It is a fat free lunch meat alternative,¬† made with veggie and soy protein. Normally I’m skeptical of these products- I’ve tried a “ground beef” version once and had a rather, icky, experience. Too gummy, weird taste, you get the deal. However, I thought I would give this “deli meat” a shot- I mean why not? I was craving some turkey, and Thanksgiving was still a few days away…

The Roast Turkey is cholesterol free, without MSG, nitrates, and other fillers in standard cold cuts. It was round in shape, sort of like bolongna cold cuts, and had a brown/tan color. It smelt mildy spicy/peppery as I opened the package. I took a bite and….to my surprise, it was good! “Yum” was actually the first word that popped into my head. It tasted like TURKEY! How they do this, I’ll never know, but it was certainly yummy. It wasn’t too salty either, and had a nice spiced flavor with some onion and garlic mixed in. The consistency was also the same as cold cuts, not gummy or chewy, but pretty much the same as a slice you’d get from the deli counter. I even fooled my mom with this product asking her if she liked “the new turkey flavor that the store carried”. She said it was good and she would like it with a slice of cheese on a sandwich- but she didn’t know it wasn’t Turkey!

Overall, I give this 4 stars. I had a serving after a rigorous kickboxing class and it held me over until lunch with the yummy protein it provided. I think it was good by itself, but would be awesome on a sandwich, on some crackers, or maybe even rolled up hot with some all natural gravy. Yum! I’m interested in trying more of the deli selections by LightLife since the Turkey flavor was a hit. Perhaps you can save a turkey this year ? ūüôā

So bloggies- have you had any good or (gross!) experiences with “meat alternatives”? Any brands you reccommend/hate? Let me know here!

4 slices is 100 calories,¬†3.5 grams of fat,¬†5 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber and 13 grams of protein. There are 300 mg (13%) per 4 slices, which isn’t too shabby, either.

WATER, WHEAT GLUTEN, SOYBEAN OIL, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, SOY SAUCE (WATER, SOYBEANS, WHEAT, SALT), NAVY BEAN FLOUR, LESS THAN 2% OF: TOFU POWDER (DEHULLED SOYBEANS, CALCIUM SULFATE), RICE BRAN, AUTOLYZED YEAST EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVOR (FROM PLANT SOURCES), SALT, CARRAGEENAN, WHEAT STARCH, CALCIUM LACTATE, ONION POWDER, GARLIC POWDER, SEA SALT, CITRIC ACID.

Can Do Nutrition/Energy Bars

Hey guys- sorry it’s been a while. School, work and just a LOT to do lately. But I’m back, never fear!

CANNNDO

Can Do Energy/Nutrition bars are geared towards kids who live active lifestyles. The bar was forumlated to help active kids get the nutrition they need while eating something that was tasty as well. The slogan is “It’s not about age, it’s about attitude!” A Can Do Kid can do anything! Of course, these bars can be eaten by anyone, even the kid at heart (like myself!). They are all natural, contain no trans fats,¬† no high fructose corn syrup, have 17 vitamins & minerals, and are now gluten free.

The Can Do company sent me all three of the flavors, Chocolate Crunch, Cookies & Cream, and Canilla Vanilla. Each of the packages has 2 conveinent bars, so if you want “one now and one for later”, you can do that, or eat both at the same time for a super energy boost!

Cookies & Cream– This didn’t really taste “cookies & creamy” to me. It tasted more like a chocolate malt than the traditional cookies & cream flavor we are all used to. However, it was still tasty, and it sure was chocolatey! Coated in a layer of smooth¬†chocolate, there was a crispy texture in the middle. The chocolate coating is a bit “crumby”, and¬†it falls off as you bite it. It was sort of a cross between a chocolate bar and a luna bar with the texture, consistency and the taste.

Chocolate Crunch– this bar tasted pretty much like the Cookies & Cream flavor, but it was a bit sweeter. I liked this one better than the Cookies & Cream flavor, it had a deeper chocolate taste.

Canilla Vanilla– Yum! Now i like this one!! It was also coated with chocolate, but a white chocolate. I think it had a slight macadamia flavoring. If you’ve ever had the white chocolate macadamia bar by Luna, it tastes somewhat similar. This was the sweetest of the three bars, but not overpoweringly sweet. There also was a slight hint of a cinnamon taste.

Overall, i think these would be best when you need a protein boost or a good choice after a workout. To me, the taste was like a “healthy candy bar”. You can get your chocolate/sweet fix without un-doing your diet, and also get some vitamins and minerals as well. My only complaint is that they lack fiber, something I like to have in a bar. I will probably buy the Can-illa Vanilla flavor again, because i like the protein. I had one of these bars when my tummy was GRUMBLING, and it satisfied me nicely.

1 package (2 bars) is 170 calories, 5-6 grams of fat, 20-21 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 9 grams of protein.

Luna Cookies

luna

I looveee Clif bars and Luna bars are pretty good as well. I’m not too crazy about the soy crisp part (hence why i prefer clif bars), but Luna Bars do make some tasty flavors (like S’mores and Nuts over Chocolate!).
However, Luna came out with a new product, the Luna “Cookie”. It comes in 3 flavors, Chocolate Mint, Berry Pomegranate, and Peanut Butter Chocolate. They range from 130 to 150 calories, 2.5-6 grams of fat, 23-27 grams of carbs, 3-4¬†grams¬†of fiber, and 3-4 grams of protein. They¬†are¬†all natural,¬†whole grain snacks that are also fortified with vitamins and minerals.
Now on to the tasting…

Peanut Butter Chocolate- my favorite of the three. It’s creamy, peanut buttery, and nutty tasting. The cookie isn’t dry at all, its very moist. The chocolate drizzle on top also adds a nice touch. But when do you ever¬†lose with a peanut butter chocolate combination? ūüôā

Berry Pomegranate-  this one was fruity and sweet. It has pomegranates and goji berries packed in this little baby, boosting the antioxidant powers. The white drizzle on top was also sweet and had a hint of vanilla.

Chocolate Mint- i wasn’t too crazy about this one, but only because i’m not a minty person. BUT- if you like Girl Scout Thin Mints, you will¬†like this cookie. The first bite is like “WOAH-MINTY”, but as you eat the rest of the cookie, the “mintyness” tones down, and the “chocolateyness” comes out. Here’s a pic of the Chocolate Mint Flavor…berry

Overall, these aren’t “cookies” per se. When opening the cookies, they don’t look like “cookies” either. They are square in shape and are cut down the middle, so there are two “bars”. It looks like a clif z-bar cut in half, to be honest, and each is¬†chewy/moist due to the fig paste in them.¬†I think these would be good for an light afternoon snack or something pre-workout because they are whole grain and have brown rice syrup in them.

Peanut Butter Chocolate-Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Peanut Butter, Organic Fig Paste, Organic Roasted Peanuts, Organic Flaxseed Meal, Organic Chocolate Chips (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Paste, Organic Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Oat Fiber, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt, Baking Soda.

Berry Pomegranate-Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Dried Blueberries (Organic Blueberries, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Sunflower Oil), Organic Fig Paste, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Pomegranate Juice Concentrate, Organic Flaxseed Meal, Organic Icing (Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Rice Extract, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Goji Berries, Organic Oat Fiber, Organic Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, Baking Soda, Citric Acid, Sea Salt.

Chocolate Mint- Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Fig Paste, Organic Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Unsweetened Chocolate, Organic Cocoa Butter, Lecithin, Natural Flavors), Organic Cocoa Powder (Processed with Alkali), Organic Flaxseed Meal, Organic Icing (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Rice Extract, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Cocoa Powder, Organic Oat Fiber, Organic Natural Flavors, Baking Soda, Sea Salt, Natural Flavor.
