Nature’s Path Organic Optimum Strawberry & Yogurt cereal

Nature’s Path is one of my favorite brands. They make a bunch of yummy cereals, bars, and too addictive toaster pastries. All organic, all healthy, and all delicious. As part of the Optimum line of cereals, which includes Blueberry & Cinnamon, Banana & Almond, Cranberry & Ginger and Slim, i saw the Strawberry & Yogurt variety and decided to give it a shot. It looked like a healthier, more sustaining version of Special K. I also liked the fact that there were yogurt clusters in it, i looove when cereals add those in šŸ™‚

So I gave it a shot. This particular cereal has psyllium for heart health and regularity as well, and is also a good source of Omega-3’s.Ā It has flax flakes, wheat puffs and the psyllium twigs, and then the yogurt clusters and little bits of freeze-dried strawberries. It was a nice combination of chewy,Ā crunchy and fruity. It was lightly sweet, and had a satisfying crunch. The puffs were nice and airy, as they should be. I really really liked (as expected) the yogurt covered rice crisps. They were creamy and strawberry tasting, and had a little crunch to them. I actually sat with the box of cereal open and picked out the little yogurt crisps i liked them so much! (Not a good idea because now the next time i eat this cereal, all the yogurt pieces will be gone! grr!! ) I also liked the strawberries, which added a surprise zing of tartness/sweetness like in Special K cereal.

Overall, i give it 4 stars. This cereal paired well with my Stonyfield Farm Pomegranate Berry Yogurt, but it also was good with some lightly sweetened almond milk, by itself, with greek yogurt and with skim milk ( I like to eat my products a lot before a review-ya know know it is šŸ™‚Ā  ) It has a lot of fiber, so paired with my yogurt, i was full/satisfiedĀ all morning.

1 cup is 170 calories, 3 grams of fat, 40 carbohydrates, 7 grams of fiber, and 5 grams of protein. It also provides 15 grams of more of whole grains per cup.

Organic wheat bran, organic wheat meal, organic evaporated cane juice, organic puffed KamutĀ® Khorasan wheat, organic yogurt coated rice crisps (organic evaporated cane juice, organic palm kernel oil, organic non fat yogurt, organic brown rice flour, organic coconut oil, organic cultured non fat dried milk (organic skim milk, culture), organic soy lecithin, lactic acid, organic vanilla flavor, organic molasses, sea salt), organic oat fiber, organic psyllium seed husk, organic flax meal, organic oat bran, organic barley malt extract, organic freeze dried strawberries, organic whole oat flour, natural strawberry flavor, sea salt, tocopherols (natural vitamin E).

To save the environment 2. Reduce Health Risks and 3. Support SmallĀ businesses. They are also a good source of whole grains and calcium šŸ™‚ Finally, a cookie everyone can feel good about eating!!
They come in two flavors, White Chocolate and Milk Chocolate. I got the pleasure of trying both, provided by Late July. Each of the sandwich cookies are ADORABLE. They have a whole bunch of animals on the outside cookie part, including the Leatherback Sea Turtle, Red Wolf, Chimpanzee, Sumatran Rhino, Pygmy Rabbit, Black-Footed Ferret and the Giant Panda. My favorite was the panda! So cute! How could you eat these guys ?

White Chocolate- Very delicious. Tastes like a mini oreo-but not as fake tasting or overly sweet. The cream is soft and sweet, with a light vanilla flavor. The chocolate cookie is crisp, and easy to swirl off of the cream.

Milk Chocolate– Also deeeeeelicious. Think keebler cookies, but better! The chocolate cream on the inside tastes like a soft, creamy milk chocolate, accompanied by a rich vanilla cookie on the outside.

Overall, these sandwich cookies ROCK. 4 stars for sure. These are great by themselves or with a glass of milk. I spread some natural peanut butter on the white chocolate flavor-HEAVEN!! I would love to try more Late July products. They seem AWESOME!!

Country Choice Soft Baked Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie

choice

Who doesn’t love cooooookies!? Especially chocolate chip. Especially soft baked chocolate chip cookies. I’m drooling thinking about them… šŸ™‚
What we don’t love? That Mom’s home-made cookies are often heart attacks disguised in cute little circles, or that store bought deli cookies have a TON of fat, OR that the cookies you wouldĀ  buy in store have more ingredients than you can pronounce or should even have to eat.

Never fear, that’s why IM here! I found Country Choice organic soft baked cookies. They claim to have a “homemade taste”, are “soft and chewy”, and have no trans fats and are whole grain. These can’t possible be tasty you say? WRONG. They come in 5 flavors, Oatmeal Raisin, Old Fashioned Oatmeal, Oatmeal Cranberry, Double Fudge Brownie, and the oneĀ I picked, Oatmeal Chocolate Chip.
So how does it taste? Well it sure is soft. And, well, chewy! It’s really good. And i hate to sound like an ad for the cookie, but they do taste homemade! It’s normal cookie size, about the width of a jar lid of peanut butter or mayo. The cookie breaks and falls apart easily. They come in individual packages (THANK GOD- i would totally eat the whole box if they didn’t!), and i left one in my bag and needless to say it turned to cookie crumbs. *oops!* That’s okay, i just sprinkled it on some vanilla fro-yo for an extra treat! šŸ™‚ The cookie part has a slight cinnamon/honey taste, and has that “just came out of an oven” taste to it as well. My favorite part was the dark chocolate chips. They were REALLY good, and sweet!
Overall, i like these. My only complaints is that although whole grain, they only had 1 gram of fiber, and they also contained refined sugar. But, you win some , you lose some. I’d pick these over chips ahoy or my mom’s (sorry ma!) any day!

1 cookie is 100 calories (yay!), 4 grams of fat, 15 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 1 gram of protein. These are also wheat free (yay again!!)

Organic Whole Grain Rolled Oats, Organic Sugar, Organic Dark Chocolate Chips (Organic Sugar, Organic Chocolate Liquor, Organic Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin and Organic Vanilla Extract. May Contain Traces of Milk.), Water, Organic High Oleic Sunflower and/or Safflower Oil, Organic Honey, Organic Brown Rice Flour, Organic Cane Syrup, Organic Whole Grain Oat Flour, Organic Whole Eggs, Leavening (Baking Soda, Monocalcium Phosphate), Corn Starch, Sea Salt, Organic Vanilla Extract, Guar Gum, Soy Lecithin, Organic Cinnamon.

Earth’s Best Elmo Mac’n Cheese

ELMOO

Macaroni & cheese anyone? Who, honestly, can resist mac & cheese!? This sinful dish is often gooey, cheesy and delicious, but also often packed with sodium, artificial colors and fillers. But not this mac & cheese!
Earth’s Best Elmo (yes, ELMO!) Mac’n Cheese is all natural, with 22g of whole grain per serving. Yes i admit, it’s probably aimed toward kids, but who says “older kids” can’t enjoy it as well? Plus i’m a sucker for portion size!

This Mac & Cheese comes with a side of carrots and broccoli for extra nutrition. If you look on the box, you will see, yes, the macaroni is in shapes of elmo’s face. Cute! I was excited to try this, i love macaroni & cheese, but we all know how easy it is to overdo it.

So how does this meal live up? Well, this is real macaroni & cheese. No fake boxed crapola, no cheese “powder”, no dyes. This uses REAL cheese, REAL milk. So, it tastes like REAL macaroni & cheese! It’s very creamy, cheesy, and buttery tasting. The cheese adheres well to the elmo pasta, which is cooked nicely, not mushy but not too hard either. There’s a pretty generous portion of pasta in this meal too, i thought it would be a itsy bitsy amount of pasta, but nope, there are a lot of cheesy elmo faces ready to be eaten. As for the veggies, i would have liked more. The broccoli is not big at all, rather chopped up in little bits. The carrots are good though, soft and sweet. It’s a good compliment to the mac & cheese, but i wish there was more. To make it more filling i added an extra serving of vegetables and had some protein with it as well.

As for the nutrition, it’s pretty good! It’s 220 calories, 7 grams of fat (YES, SEVEN, and it’s made with REAL ingredients!), 33 grams of carbs, 5 grams of fiber, and 9 grams of protein. I was happy that the first ingredient was whole grain durum wheat for the pasta, not blanched wheat/refined flour. Yay! It’s also enriched with extra vitamins and minerals, like B vitamins, etc.

The only cons for this meal that i have is it skimps a little on protein (but as i said, i just had a little extra to round this out and make it more of a meal for my size), and it has 4 grams of saturated fat, probably from the heavy creamĀ ,Ā cheddar cheese and butter oil in the ingredients.Ā But most macaroni & cheese has about that amount of saturated fat, and at least this fat is from real cheese & butter and not fake stuff..

So if your craving mac & cheese, this will help your craving without helping your waistline fill out. Give it a shot- and enjoy the cute little elmo faces!

Organic Elmo Pasta (Organic Whole Grain Durum Wheat, Organic Durum Semolina, Vitamins & Minerals [reduced iron, niacinamide, zinc oxide, riboflavin, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, cyancobalamin]), Cheese Sauce [water, heavy cream, cheddar cheese [cultured pasteurized milk, salt, enzymes, annatto color], nonfat milk, corn starch, butter oil, enriched wheat flour [flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid], sea salt, natural flavor, torula yeast, xanthan gum, annatto color), Organic Carrots, Organic Broccoli.
